Initial Kitchen Reno Plans

You may remember this post about our temporary kitchen reno from a few months ago.  We're now planning out another reno to be started in the next month or so.  We were technically not supposed to start this reno for another couple of years, but my mom needs to get her kitchen done and wants our cabinets.  She felt that it made more sense for her to take our cabinets since she is not sure how long she will be living in her house before downsizing.  So long story short, we're trying to figure out the best layout for our new kitchen.

This is the idea we have right now and I am totally up for any input you may have.  The major changes that will be made to the room are a 9 foot walkout to a deck/outdoor living space and a small opening to our living room.

The walkout would be along this back wall with a new island with the stools on the opposite side to where they are now.  The sink will be relocated to the island.

The back wall will be a pantry wall with an integrated fridge.

The stove will move to one side of the current fridge/pantry wall.  And we would add a 4 foot opening to the living room approximately where the fridge is now.  The lower half of the opening will be covered by cabinetry with the countertop extending through.

Here's a little sketch I made of the opening wall and island with possible cabinetry configurations.  These are really rough and the island drawing is overlapping the wall with the opening.

I'm still considering the opening to the living room.  It was something I had wanted to do when we first moved into the house, but I'm wondering if it will look good.  It would be great for keeping an eye on the kids and would give a great connection to the new walkout, but I'd also loose some of the privacy from the kitchen mess.  I taped out the opening on the living room side to see what it would look like.  The little pieces on the left show where we would be opening up the dining room bulkhead.

So that's where I'm at in terms of a floor plan right now.  I'm still trying to decide if it is exactly right.  If you have any ideas for me, I'd love to hear them!  I'll share with you the design details a little later.  It's looking like it's going to be pretty minimal and clean lined.

  2. The plans look good. I love the idea of walk out. If I was doing this reno I don't think I'd make the opening to the living room. The kitchen is open to the dining area and you also have the other walk way on the other side. I would use every inch for cabinet space I could with the layout configuration you have. :) But this is just my opinion. :) Can't wait to see how gorgeous you make it look. It's gorgeous as it is.

  3. As much as I love the kitchen you already have, I am so excited about your new plan. Having those doors to the outside opposite the island is going to be spectacular!!!

  6. sounds like a really good plan. i like the idea of keeping the kitchen separate from the living space. it does keep the kitchen mess hidden from sight from the rest of the living area. and it looks like your kitchen is already open and light. but, if you really feel like you need more light and openness, then i think it will look great.

  7. I think open plan is the way people are going as it joins the rooms together so you dont feel like your stuck in the kitchen while everyone else is having fun in the living room. I agree you will loose some privacy/hiding the mess but it looks like you are a clean cook anyway so you dont need to worry about that!

  9. I agree with Kristin..I love it already, so I can't wait to see what you do next! I'm planning a kitchen reno too, but I'm just not sure when it'll get done. It's going to be pretty pricey since we plan to move a window and door too. Eeeek!

  11. hmmm... i'm not sure about the opening in the wall... i've seen a lot of those in these older homes and in condos... usually people do it just to avoid having to do more work due to vents, gas or water lines in the walls; they simply work around them... i find that they often look good from one side (i.e. the kitchen), but don't look great from the other side (family room in your case)... so if you were to go with the hole, that would be your next challenge, incorporating it into both spaces.
but really... your boys will only need close supervision for a little bit longer... this time flies by way too quickly ♥

  12. I can't wait to see what you decide on. The space is great already. I think a little peek through into a living room is nice, especially with littles running around.

  13. I have no idea about the opening...it takes me forever to visualize things like that even in my own house. but I'm excited to see it all come together! I love the idea of the sink in the island.

  14. I have no good advice to offer. Sorry. But I love the idea of the walkout and can't wait to see how it all comes together! I have no doubt that you will do a fantastic job with it.

  15. I like the walkout idea... but opening it up to the living room seems to be a bit much.

  16. I'm already starting to design my new kitchen even though I have no idea when it will be, but I think it's something that needs a tremendous amount of thought and you might start with one plan but end up with something completely different.

Karen from The Art of Doing Stuff is currently re-doing her whole kitchen and had a designer (Carol Reed) design a brand new layout for her and was full of expert advice. If you look at both Karen's website (http://www.theartofdoingstuff.com/the-kitchen-renovation-the-first-thing-you-should-do/) and Carol's (http://www.thedesignshop.ca/Site/Home.html)

I'm thinking of using Carol myself when the time comes.

    Good luck!

    1. Thanks Robyn for the links. It does take a lot of thought to plan a kitchen. I'm still tweaking our plan and the thought of using a designer would be lovely. :)

  17. Such a beautiful and fresh home! I was wondering what the dimensions are of your kitchen? I would like to compare it to my house which has a very similar floor plan. Thanks :)

    1. Thanks so much Liz! The kitchen is approximately 12' by 14'. We have changed this initial reno plan a little and I will have a post about it soon (in case you're interested).
