<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's Christmas home tour time and I'm so happy to be joining the Canadian Bloggers Christmas Home Tours again this year. Each year my Christmas decor seems to get more and more simple and I would have to say that this year is no exception. I tend to decorate using mostly natural greenery, decorations I have made and a few carefully selected pieces that I really love. This year my decor has a lot of pastels again, but you'll see some more traditional red making an appearance in my entry and office which was not intentional at all, but I'll get into that more in the tour below!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Let's start in the entry and work our way around the main living spaces. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Vd2pEofMF_0/WEi1SPs9B0I/AAAAAAAAJcw/L-hQUmFa2_YHrT3WZ-Lh_jtkgjkLwUSAQCEw/s1600/modern%2Bchristmas%2Bhome%2Btour%2B5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-Vd2pEofMF_0/WEi1SPs9B0I/AAAAAAAAJcw/L-hQUmFa2_YHrT3WZ-Lh_jtkgjkLwUSAQCEw/s1600/modern%2Bchristmas%2Bhome%2Btour%2B5.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The entry has just a couple of decorations. I made a wreath from a pre-lit, faux birch twig garland and some fir branches. It hangs simply from one of the Muuto dot coat hooks. I also hung a jingle bell star from the door handle that I picked up after Christmas last year. A pine cone and a single pine branch add a little Christmas to the top of the shoe cabinets.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Directly beside the entry is my workspace. I placed a mini Christmas tree right at the door so that you can see it from the entry, living room and workspace. This little tree greets us whenever we come home. It also functions as a spot for the boys to hang their felt advent ornaments and their special Christmas ornaments which happen to be mostly red! The red jacket that's in the entry was also left there by the boys so I would say the addition of red was their design choice, but I kind of like it too. ; )<br />
<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Before I turn the camera the other direction, I thought I'd share this little corner with the piano and my favourite vintage ceramic tree. Nalle is clearly impressed with my decorating. Ha!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This year we managed to get our tree just in time for these pictures. I wanted a fluffy tree and my boys helped me cut down this white pine. I also let them decorate the tree entirely by themselves and when they decided they were done I let it be. It's missing a bunch of the ornaments and it's definitely not perfect, but I love that it was their own not so little project. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The fireplace is decorated with some greenery, a plywood star that Hubby cut for me and one of the beaded snowflake ornaments I made last year. The print on the mantel is one I picked up when we visited Estonia last summer. My mom knit those stockings for me quite a few years ago.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I like how the pink bottle brush tree works with the giant Birds of Paradise plant in the corner opposite the Christmas tree. Somehow a pink tree feels like it could go with a tropical plant. </div>

The dining room might be my favourite room this Christmas. I pulled our blue-grey Saarinen chairs back in and hung up my DIY wall hanging. The wooden bead garland is a nod to all the natural wood decor I have going on in the rest of the house and the wool felt star garland I made last year. I also have another plywood star that I made a couple of years ago. The sideboard seemed like the best spot for the DIY advent candle holder and I love the little Spruce tree in the cloth bag. I also like to borrow the boys' wooden deer family during Christmas. One of them is nicely on display under the cloche. :) A pine garland, bottle brush trees and votive candles make for a centrepiece that I can keep up for the whole Christmas season.<br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The last space I'm going to share is our kitchen. Christmas tree advent candle holders and some of the boys' toy deer house on a pink tray make another simple vignette that easily can be moved out of the way when I'm baking our cooking on the island. My little kitchen shelf also got a little Christmas tree decor. <a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xRmLuzBuEjs/WEhhljBbFRI/AAAAAAAAJcY/VxpdAMRyADocCjevENmWnzORwfTuGCpewCLcB/s1600/modern%2Bchristmas%2Bhome%2Btour%2B19.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-xRmLuzBuEjs/WEhhljBbFRI/AAAAAAAAJcY/VxpdAMRyADocCjevENmWnzORwfTuGCpewCLcB/s1600/modern%2Bchristmas%2Bhome%2Btour%2B19.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In this last picture you've come full circle since this is the view of our kitchen that you would have as you walk in the front door. I drew the chalkboard tree with the boys help (they mostly coloured in the christmas lights) based on some I had found on Pinterest. Oh, and I always prefer to right December ("Joulukuu") in Finnish since it means "Christmas month"!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I hope you've enjoyed my Christmas tour and make sure to check out all these other tours happening this week as well!:</div>

It's September and back to school time. My oldest is starting Grade 1 next week. He's still just 5 years-old and it's mandatory for him to attend school full-time here in Canada. I kept him part-time for the past couple of years (for Junior and Senior Kindergarten) although most families send their children full-time. We're going to have a bit of an adjustment period this month I'm sure! I personally didn't start school until I was 7 years-old which was when we moved to Canada from Finland. I had previously attended child care in Finland, but did not go to a formal school so I tend to feel for my little boys that get these expectations piled on them at an early age. I tend to wonder what the long term implications of all this pressure might be and whether I'm the only one concerned? Anyway, back to the topic of this post!</div>

Here is your printable calendar for September. The nights are starting to get a little longer, but still warm enough to spend some time outdoors and gaze at the stars (if your lucky enough to live far enough from the city lights! ). </div>

The last full month of summer and usually quite lovely here in Toronto since the nights start to cool just a little. We had such a busy July with most of it being spent in Finland that I am looking forward to being home this month. Hopefully, I'll be able to leisurely work on our house and finish off the dollhouse too. Maybe I'm being ambitious here! It is summer after all and I'm sure the majority of my time will be taken up just enjoying summer days with my boys. I hope your summer is going well and that you enjoy this month's calendar.<br />

We also have a great giveaway from Miniatures.com that you can enter at the bottom of this post. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I didn't quite finish my dollhouse in time, but I do have the the bedroom to share with you today as well as a sneak peek at the living room. I ran out of time a little since we headed off to Finland for 3 1/2 weeks in the middle of this month. I'll be sure to share updates as I finish off the last couple of rooms in the dollhouse. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IFMgk3FLCsA/V3FnATYi5PI/AAAAAAAAJUs/q01HTFS61UoATiJBHYpwgeJayJCDCVIKQCLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bbedroom%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-IFMgk3FLCsA/V3FnATYi5PI/AAAAAAAAJUs/q01HTFS61UoATiJBHYpwgeJayJCDCVIKQCLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bbedroom%2B1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For the bedroom the main piece that I made was this bed. I decided that a low modern bed would work well for this modern farmhouse. I cut the pieces from basswood and used small dowels for the legs. I sewed the bed linens using a few different prints including a Marimekko Luovi blue and a white throw pillow. My mom crocheted the round cushion. The artwork you may recognize from the kitchen, but I tried it in the bedroom and really liked how the colours worked with the bedding and decided to leave it there.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7k9iSESpRHk/V3FoLwK320I/AAAAAAAAJU8/JvSJicWLHQoSFODVP0R9oxzYFtn35SqEwCLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bbedroom%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-7k9iSESpRHk/V3FoLwK320I/AAAAAAAAJU8/JvSJicWLHQoSFODVP0R9oxzYFtn35SqEwCLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bbedroom%2B2.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The bedside sconces were made from wooden beads, dowels and small squares of craft wood. I started by sanding one end of the bead down to make a flatter end so it would look more like a real lamp shade. Hubby then drilled some holes near the top of the bead to accommodate the "arm" (dowel). He also drilled small holes into the square "mounting plates" (craft wood) for the other end of the dowel to go into. The whole assembly was then mounted to the wall. I added small pieces of baker's twine to mimic electrical cords.</div>

This room has a full light door that I'd still like to add a balcony too, but you do get to see another angle of the bed and sconces from this side. :)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The dresser in the room was a little furniture makeover project. I had a small Queen Anne style dresser that I took the legs and hardware off of. I painted it white and then added dowel legs and "bar pulls" (black wire) with beads for a much more modern look. I gave the flower pot a little two-tone paint job to add another hint of blue.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fyeF3Z1pi0s/V3FvcHM3bzI/AAAAAAAAJV4/1HlbiIjbDMQwPBYAlwfj_1dO1rOHccfdwCLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bbedroom%2B6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-fyeF3Z1pi0s/V3FvcHM3bzI/AAAAAAAAJV4/1HlbiIjbDMQwPBYAlwfj_1dO1rOHccfdwCLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bbedroom%2B6.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A little shot of the three finished upstairs rooms.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Jb-RZIcOIFM/V3FyOBW99KI/AAAAAAAAJWQ/wt9kAWBg02wxGHy3nxk9Pc1lSDu1r9PzgCLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bliving%2Broom%2B.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-Jb-RZIcOIFM/V3FyOBW99KI/AAAAAAAAJWQ/wt9kAWBg02wxGHy3nxk9Pc1lSDu1r9PzgCLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bliving%2Broom%2B.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's a sneak peek at the living room. I managed to give the fireplace a new "marble" surround. I also made a sofa. I tried to make it look like our own Muuto Rest sofa. I think it resembles it a little. I even used the same Maharam fabric that is on our real sofa. The rug is also made from some wool fabric. I sewed the pieces together using an overlock type stitch and my mom helped me with the tassels on the end. She also knit that little cushion. I still have to add some side tables, coffee table, chairs, artwork, etc. before this space will be done, but I thought I'd give you a peek inside since I had originally hoped to be able to finish this room as well this month.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

It's the final month of Dollhouse Therapy with my friends <a href="http://primitiveandproper.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Cassie</a>, <a href="http://semiglossdesign.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Emy</a> and <a href="http://thoughtsfromalice.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Alice</a>. I'm supposed to have this dollhouse finished by the end of this month, but I'm quite certain I won't have it entirely finished. My target is to finish the bedroom and the living room, but since we're leaving for Finland in a week and I'm not sure how much I can tackle before then! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Today you'll get a little before tour of the two rooms and I'll be sharing some of the design ideas I have for the spaces.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CfmEd6RxUIE/V19eIXUJeNI/AAAAAAAAJTs/HPzRDj8ewHklBk883k8BQlt-vMgo8POmACLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bbedroom%2Bplan%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-CfmEd6RxUIE/V19eIXUJeNI/AAAAAAAAJTs/HPzRDj8ewHklBk883k8BQlt-vMgo8POmACLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bbedroom%2Bplan%2B1.jpg" /></a></div>
<br />
Let's look at the bedroom first:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hHXkwaExofI/V19eITMUs-I/AAAAAAAAJTo/qcaifPk1FVI2tgqi5pXAHQ2xCDZU-OGKACLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bbedroom%2Bplan%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hHXkwaExofI/V19eITMUs-I/AAAAAAAAJTo/qcaifPk1FVI2tgqi5pXAHQ2xCDZU-OGKACLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bbedroom%2Bplan%2B2.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-M0Auu2SJH1I/V19eh5X8zqI/AAAAAAAAJUM/F14HycP3qr8qPQoQxtiaiUm_nKGmucabACLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bbedroom%2Bplan%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-M0Auu2SJH1I/V19eh5X8zqI/AAAAAAAAJUM/F14HycP3qr8qPQoQxtiaiUm_nKGmucabACLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bbedroom%2Bplan%2B3.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For the bedroom, I have all the windows, baseboards and floors in place so I'm going to be focusing on making some furniture. I plan on making a bed with a plywood headboard and am trying to figure out how to make some sconces to use as bedside lamps. Side tables are also on the to make list. Right now I placed a crocheted doily down as a rug (my mom had it in her stash), but I won't know if it works in the space until I get the furniture in there. One of my favourite features of the room is the full light door. I may even make a little Juliette balcony so that the squirrel family can have a step outside. ;)</div>
<br />
Next up is the living room:<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CGPJF3blVPA/V19eIi9KYTI/AAAAAAAAJT0/pvdeyC2nRDskRZBvz30ARsbhS_O5LIA2gCLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bliving%2Broom%2Bplan%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-CGPJF3blVPA/V19eIi9KYTI/AAAAAAAAJT0/pvdeyC2nRDskRZBvz30ARsbhS_O5LIA2gCLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bliving%2Broom%2Bplan%2B1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jmmxf8aRnjA/V19eI8KvFkI/AAAAAAAAJT4/VdUxNHt_kpEZsmXScLHhjVwkKExbHmr3wCLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bliving%2Broom%2Bplan%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-jmmxf8aRnjA/V19eI8KvFkI/AAAAAAAAJT4/VdUxNHt_kpEZsmXScLHhjVwkKExbHmr3wCLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bliving%2Broom%2Bplan%2B2.jpg" /></a></div>
The living room is the largest room in the house and I'm a little nervous about how much furniture I will need to fill it. I'm planning on making a mini version of <a href="http://www.nalleshouse.com/2015/07/our-new-sofa.html" target="_blank">our own Muuto Rest sofa</a> and adding some "marble" or tile to that fireplace. One idea that I'm pretty excited about is for a little built-in window seat. I had the intention of ordering a mini Eames rocker for this room as well, but I can't seem to find one for a reasonable price/reasonable shipping cost. If you know where I can get one, please share! Then if I could fashion a diamond chair, I'd pretty much have my current living room in mini size. :) <br />
<br />
I'm pretty excited for these rooms and also to see what my cohosts come up with. Stop by <a href="http://primitiveandproper.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Cassie</a>, <a href="http://thoughtsfromalice.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Alice</a> and <a href="http://semiglossdesign.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Emy</a>'s blogs to see their dollhouse therapy plans for this month. Also, don't forget to come back on the last Tuesday of this month for the reveals and to enter a great giveaway with Miniatures.com!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com6tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2010234535625881956.post-18316215600523670082016-05-31T06:00:00.000-04:002016-05-31T07:58:47.796-04:00Little Modern Farmhouse Bathroom and Workspace<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm so happy to be able to share the bathroom and workspace of my Little Modern Farmhouse. It's the second set of reveals for the Dollhouse Therapy challenge with my friends <a href="http://primitiveandproper.com/" target="_blank">Cassie</a>, <a href="http://www.thoughtsfromalice.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Alice</a> and <a href="http://www.semiglossdesign.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Emy</a> as well as the link up for everyone who is joining us in this dollhouse fun.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This month's rooms were quite a bit of work since I made almost everything in them myself. I think two pieces are not DIYs of some sort! It made for a month of a lot of work with some teeny tiny materials which was fun for the most part. I must admit thought that I did get pretty frustrated handling little tiny pieces on those 30 C+ days when my hands felt like swollen sausages! ;) I think it was worth the work and the frustration when I see the end result and I hope you like these spaces too.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1zmDGY3Kp8Q/V0z03eeUxKI/AAAAAAAAJS8/HOe9Kwemy68yLSGSXQV24j-JwvOwqxvhACLcB/s1600/diy%2Bmodern%2Bdollshouse_edited-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-1zmDGY3Kp8Q/V0z03eeUxKI/AAAAAAAAJS8/HOe9Kwemy68yLSGSXQV24j-JwvOwqxvhACLcB/s1600/diy%2Bmodern%2Bdollshouse_edited-2.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is a first look at the two spaces. The rooms are right beside one another which was kind of fun since I was able to capture both of them in one shot. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-W7vb9p4x258/V0z_PMb6TpI/AAAAAAAAJTY/vLnClKbRK38LVsRavpszSeqfZEGcX43RQCLcB/s1600/modern%2Bfarmhouse%2Bdollhouse.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-W7vb9p4x258/V0z_PMb6TpI/AAAAAAAAJTY/vLnClKbRK38LVsRavpszSeqfZEGcX43RQCLcB/s1600/modern%2Bfarmhouse%2Bdollhouse.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This overall shot of the layout of the dollhouse will hopefully give you a sense of where these rooms are before we take a closer look at each space. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-or0Y0FxfjIY/V0uRkEgeGnI/AAAAAAAAJOQ/UVBaKGA3LeMXg0-L8CXtsd6jjnPcgNR2wCLcB/s1600/diy%2Bmodern%2Bdollhouse%2Bworkspace%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-or0Y0FxfjIY/V0uRkEgeGnI/AAAAAAAAJOQ/UVBaKGA3LeMXg0-L8CXtsd6jjnPcgNR2wCLcB/s1600/diy%2Bmodern%2Bdollhouse%2Bworkspace%2B2.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In the centre of the second floor was this small stair hall which I thought would be perfect to make into a workspace. I continued the black railing that you may remember from the kitchen to close in the stair opening. I'm supposed to add another set of stairs to go up to the third floor, but I haven't decided whether I will put them in this space or not. I kind of like seeing that railing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-juPcYwpMrTg/V0ty1v-HkeI/AAAAAAAAJN4/j5MnL2x8S2oxGsDfkpdhn0Z3OXjZ45HCgCLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bworkspace.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-juPcYwpMrTg/V0ty1v-HkeI/AAAAAAAAJN4/j5MnL2x8S2oxGsDfkpdhn0Z3OXjZ45HCgCLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bworkspace.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The workspace features a mint green dipped wall to break up all the white. I also made the trestle leg desk out of basswood which was inspired by the ones I saw in <a href="http://blog.westelm.com/2015/11/09/this-modern-dollhouse-will-blow-your-mind/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this dollhouse</a> and this <a href="https://www.instagram.com/juliavalka/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Instagram</a>. The desk chair was one I already had. I just gave it a coat of grey paint. Above the desk I printed the quote off and hung it from a mini clothespin. I also had to include a mini version of my own DIY calendar. The hanging light was made from an electronics component that was found in dad's toolbox along with some wooden beads. On the desk the "pencils" were made out of toothpicks and the cup is just another wooden bead. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OQG884kpYiQ/V0ujW249ApI/AAAAAAAAJPw/tHeizzL274EniKWFZAjPu6bspFfwgMiogCLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bworkspace%2B5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-OQG884kpYiQ/V0ujW249ApI/AAAAAAAAJPw/tHeizzL274EniKWFZAjPu6bspFfwgMiogCLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bworkspace%2B5.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This little bookshelf was a really simple diy. I simply used some strips of basswood for the shelves and brass tubing for the rails. I had to use a little hot glue to keep the shelves from sliding down on the brass tubing.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This little bag beside the desk was made out of a pieces of wrapping paper and actually holds some little pieces of wrapping paper rolled up. :)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This room has so many elements in it that I really love. I kind of wish I could just blow it up and put it in my real house. ;)</div>

<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WrdRy3G05Xc/V0zsK5r3f-I/AAAAAAAAJR8/WjvxkAki0rE27jE3cMcVxHafrB44Wl2lwCLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bbathroom%2B8.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-WrdRy3G05Xc/V0zsK5r3f-I/AAAAAAAAJR8/WjvxkAki0rE27jE3cMcVxHafrB44Wl2lwCLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bbathroom%2B8.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Let's look at the vanity side of the bathroom first. The vanity I made has a modern feel with a bit of whimsy in the form of some mint ankle socks! ;) The counter is made from the same marble paper I used in <a href="http://www.nalleshouse.com/2016/04/little-modern-farmhouse-kitchen.html" target="_blank">the kitchen </a>and the sink is just a painted box that I made from balsa and basswood. The toilet is the same one that you saw in my <a href="http://www.nalleshouse.com/2016/05/little-modern-farmhouse-bathroom-plan.html" target="_blank">bathroom plan post</a>. I just cut the base and back off to make a modern toilet with a hidden tank. The mirror was another little DIY from a small round mirror and some black leather cording. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

This rug!!! It took me way too long to make. I had my littlest "helping" me and the string just kept getting all tangled. I eventually ended up getting the pattern right and am in love with this little pink number. I'm thinking of making a life-sized one for my house.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The wall-mounted faucet was a must and was super simply made from some bent brass tubing. I just can't get enough of those mint-dipped legs on the vanity! They echo the mint-dipped wall in the workspace next door.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
On the opposite side of the room is the bathtub under a really lovely window. This is actually a side access door that opens so that you can access the back of the room better. The "artwork" I painted onto a piece of balsa wood one evening. The little hanging plant might be my favourite part. I made the wall bracket from some more balsa wood and the planter from a wooden bead and strip of gold leather. The bench came with a lot of dollhouse furniture I already had.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm seriously considering this shower layout for our bathroom in our house when we decide to finally reno it. I love how it opens up at one end and has these Muuto Dots-like hooks (actually wooden buttons from the dollar store) for towels and such. I didn't bother hanging anything on them for these pictures since I liked the look of them just like this. A little wooden stump serves as a spot to sit and/or put your shampoo bottles on. The brass shower head is actually part of a miniature old-fashioned telephone that was part of that same lot of dollhouse furniture I mentioned before.</div>

Another month has just flown by. It's going to be June in just two days! We generally take our Cape Cod vacation at the end of June, but this year we're going to Finland instead. It will be the first time for our boys and the first time that they will get to meet many of their relatives. Our trip will probably be a lot of visiting family and friends, but I'm also excited to do a little exploring. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Even though there are only a couple of days of May left, it's going to be pretty exciting here on the blog. Tomorrow is another Dollhouse Therapy reveal day and I'm going to be sharing the bathroom and workspace that I worked on for many hours this month. ;) I'm really happy with how they turned out and would love for you to come back to check out the spaces tomorrow.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Below is a printable calendar for June. You may remember the strawberry design from last year. It was one of my favourites so I decided to use it again this year in a new colour way. I hope you like it as much as I do!</div>

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's time for Dollhouse Therapy month 2! I was so excited to see everyone's dollhouses coming together last week. <a href="http://primitiveandproper.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Cassie</a>, <a href="http://www.semiglossdesign.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Emy</a>, <a href="http://www.thoughtsfromalice.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Alice</a> and I are all sharing our plans for the second month of our dollhouse projects. I'm planning to tackle the bathroom this month and possibly a surprise second room if I can. I'm also hoping to finish the exterior work so that I can share with you my favourite part of the <a href="http://www.nalleshouse.com/search/label/little%20modern%20farmhouse" target="_blank">Little Modern Farmhouse</a> which is the pink front door! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Let's talk about the bathroom. It's on the second floor next to the stair hall/workspace. The rest of the rooms have some random pieces in them right now. The boys even hung a bunch of mirrors allover the place!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My 5 year-old and I have already finished the tiling the floor. I was inspired by cement tiles (like <a href="http://www.cletile.com/collections/cement-tile/products/moroccan-encaustic-cement-tile-checkmate?variant=17271099654" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">these</a>) and painted little squares of craft wood in black, grey and glued them down in a gingham pattern. I think it suits the modern farmhouse perfectly. The monochrome colour palette is a nod towards modern and the gingham is definitely farmhouse.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I have a tub and toilet that I am using from <a href="http://www.miniatures.com/4-Pc-Bathroom-Set-by-Melissa-Doug-P19771.aspx" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">this set</a>. The finishes on these pieces are not great so I'm likely going to have to sand them down and give them an update. A floor mounted tub faucet would also be fun to add. I will be making the vanity and attempting to make a shower. Hopefully it won't be too challenging!</div>

Another detail I love about this side of the house is that I was able to keep the little side access door that was part of the <a href="http://www.nalleshouse.com/2016/02/introducing-my-little-modern-farmhouse.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">original dollhouse</a> before I cut it back and converted it to a front-opening house. Maybe a nice light fixture would be lovely over that tub. What do you think? </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm excited to start another room in this house and I think this may be the cutest modern farmhouse bath yet!</div>

I'm so excited to share with you my Little Modern Farmhouse kitchen and to see what everyone else has been up to with their dollhouses (you'll find the Dollhouse Therapy Challenge linky at the bottom of this post). It does feel a little weird to write a full out blog (including a ton of photos) on a dollhouse kitchen, but I really think it turned out too cute. It would also be a massive understatement to say that I spent a lot of time on this project, but, hopefully, the end result justifies the craziness of it. ;) There are a lot of teeny tiny diys in this post and I'll share as many of the sources and printables as I can at the end of this post.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-f3PyK5O5Yno/Vx6WGAExR9I/AAAAAAAAJHw/FL_wdPbs9FkTnRYgsGCzMM4u5lwO1NjaACLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bkitchen%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-f3PyK5O5Yno/Vx6WGAExR9I/AAAAAAAAJHw/FL_wdPbs9FkTnRYgsGCzMM4u5lwO1NjaACLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bkitchen%2B1.jpg" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's a first glimpse into the kitchen from what will be the living room. For the kitchen I decided to include all the things I thought a pastel-loving, Scandinavian design enthusiast would love in their North American farmhouse. You might already spot the mint green fridge of my dreams. ;) </div>

Luckily for the squirrel family that will be living in this modern farmhouse, there was an unlimited budget when it came to materials. The calacatta marble countertops were one of their biggest splurges. To make the countertops I simply printed an image of calacatta marble that I resized in photoshop and used Modge Podge to glue it onto basswood that I cut to size. I painted the stools grey so that they would bring out the grey in the marble and so that they wouldn't blend into the wood cabinets. The hex tile was another pattern I created and printed onto photo paper. It smudged a little so next time I may have to try some other paper or laser printer. You can find the links to both my marble countertop and backsplash paper in the sources at the bottom of this post.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The cutting boards you see in this photo were all cut out of balsa or basswood. I cut a couple of house shapes and tried to mimic a Ferm Living cutting board like I have in my own kitchen. It's missing the little hole at the top since Hubby decided to lend out his drills. I'll have to add it later. The pink mixer was chrome before it was sprayed pink. It just needs a little Kitchenaid symbol on the head and it would pass as a replica. :)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These stairs are one of my favourite mishaps in this space. I started by attaching the plain stairs that came with the original dollhouse kit and covered the opening underneath with some basswood. I then changed my mind and added another layer of basswood shiplap on top to get that farmhouse look, of course! Adding the two layers of wood left some not so attractive layers of exposed wood showing right beside the staircase. I ended up solving the problem by adding balsa wood stair treads and making custom spindles just wide enough to cover the unfinished edges of my shiplap layers. I bought a piece of railing from the dollhouse store and painted it all black for a more modern look. Phew! Just trying to write all that down is a lot of work.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The shiplap wall also needed some great statement art and Mrs. Squirrel had a custom piece commissioned by yours truly. ;) I simply painted onto a scrap piece of basswood and then framed it with more wood.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The other side of the kitchen features the sink and fridge. The Home Sweet Home picture is vintage. The fridge also is vintage and I ended up painting it mint green to look a little like a Smeg. I left the original scuffs in tact which, I think, gives it a lot of charm. I'm also on the look out for the perfect sized silver pen clip to make a more retro looking handle. The mugs were a little diy project. I wasn't sure whether they turned out (they're very imperfect), but when my mom came to look at the dollhouse she asked where I got the Marimekko mugs from. If my mom thinks they look like miniature Marimekko mugs then they must, right? Also, I have a great tip for anyone wanting little branches of greens, leaves, flowers, etc. for dollhouse projects. Go to your local Michaels floral department and ask for any of the leaves, flowers, etc. that they cut off and/or discarded when making their arrangements. I was able to get a bunch of leaves and flowers for free!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
What's a farmhouse without a farmhouse sink?! I made this sink out of balsa and basswood and spray painted it gloss white. I had to modify the cabinet to fit the sink and hopefully, I remembered to take photos of that to share a tutorial with you later. The faucet and handles were bent out of brass tubing (a thinner version of the tubing I used for <a href="http://www.nalleshouse.com/2014/08/diy-brass-himmeli-hanging-planter.html" target="_blank">my himmeli planter)</a>. You can usually find brass tubing in the model train section of the hobby store.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The knobs on all the cabinet doors were the ones that came with cabinet kits. I just sprayed them black to go with the colour scheme.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GhPUaz7C034/Vx6ZpeDf0kI/AAAAAAAAJII/8PyDclDrx2gQxafJLua9pbKitfuYfe6swCLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bkitchen%2B4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-GhPUaz7C034/Vx6ZpeDf0kI/AAAAAAAAJII/8PyDclDrx2gQxafJLua9pbKitfuYfe6swCLcB/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bkitchen%2B4.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lastly, here's a little bit of a wider angle where you can see that I carried my pastels to the front door as well. The front porch will be getting a little makeover soon!</div>

Have you decided to join us? This month we are all trying to tackle one-two rooms in our dollhouses and we will be revealing the end result on the last Tuesday of this month. There will be a link party for you to share your rooms too or you can join in on Instagram using the hashtag #DollhouseTherapy. <br />
<br />
This month I've decided to tackle the kitchen, but before I get into my design ideas and progress so far. I thought I'd share a little peak inside my dollhouse. <br />

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zriHnWw_mN0/VwMazXs8miI/AAAAAAAAJGg/WXP6K-K53Fg8zGyv04jg7JnqkWA8UTHRA/s1600/diy%2Bfront-opening%2Bdollhouse%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-zriHnWw_mN0/VwMazXs8miI/AAAAAAAAJGg/WXP6K-K53Fg8zGyv04jg7JnqkWA8UTHRA/s1600/diy%2Bfront-opening%2Bdollhouse%2B3.jpg" /></a>Taking my old dollhouse completely apart and changing it to a front-opening house was A LOT more work than I could have ever imagined. I'm still finishing off a few things on the inside like baseboards, painting doors and installing the staircase. I was able to finish the window trims, painting and installing the floors since the last update I shared. The floors are white-washed wide planks that I cut out of balsa wood. I actually tried staining them a light wood colour that I didn't end up liking and I had to sand them all down before white-washing. It was another "Aaaah! what did I get myself into?!" moment. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VYVBdcPak04/VwMRFrIICgI/AAAAAAAAJFg/zcrYIDjZoqo-bKK9rSu3rn0sRzjCOFKxQ/s1600/diy%2Bfront-opening%2Bdollhouse%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-VYVBdcPak04/VwMRFrIICgI/AAAAAAAAJFg/zcrYIDjZoqo-bKK9rSu3rn0sRzjCOFKxQ/s1600/diy%2Bfront-opening%2Bdollhouse%2B1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The boys have been excited to help me out with the dollhouse. I wasn't really expecting them to be too interested, but they seem to be happy to help me build. My oldest loved laying the tile in the bathroom (you can see a little glimpse of the gingham patterned floors we made in the second photo above). Little brother is really waiting on the staircase to be installed. It's the most important part I'm told. I better get working on that!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So let's talk about the kitchen aka the room I'm tackling this month for the Dollhouse Therapy challenge.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-v7O5VKRMavc/VwMOcsLHUQI/AAAAAAAAJFQ/Oa71i_dWPyMyY6d6VmFdNfCTLwD1iDxiw/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bkitchen%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-v7O5VKRMavc/VwMOcsLHUQI/AAAAAAAAJFQ/Oa71i_dWPyMyY6d6VmFdNfCTLwD1iDxiw/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bkitchen%2B1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Mr. & Mrs. Squirrel have been really busy building kitchen cabinets and figuring out a layout. ;)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sNdJGdM2X3c/VwMPNz1Hg_I/AAAAAAAAJFU/PzLKnRP-hHYuRH6FwIxLbcthgMofCm_4g/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bkitchen%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-sNdJGdM2X3c/VwMPNz1Hg_I/AAAAAAAAJFU/PzLKnRP-hHYuRH6FwIxLbcthgMofCm_4g/s1600/modern%2Bdollhouse%2Bkitchen%2B2.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The kitchen is going to have a modern farmhouse style to go with its farmhouse exterior. The cabinets I chose are individual kits that I customized to look like flat panel drawers and shaker-style doors (I'm sharing the how to below). The range and fridge are vintage pieces that I already owned. I think I'm liking the layout that the squirrel family has come up with so far. I'm debating as to whether I will add an island with a sink or not. The staircase will be to against the left wall of the room and I'll have to see how much space there is left for the island. As for colour, I think I'm going to leave the cabinets natural wood and paint out the appliances. I also think a classic marble countertop would be lovely along with a lovely tile backsplash. Oh, the possibilities are endless in a dollhouse kitchen! ;) I have lots to do before the reveal at the end of this month!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

Customized Dollhouse Cabinets:</h3>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-v0DemPI_S1M/VwMZIfrXydI/AAAAAAAAJGY/SZq45mDcYP8C8J9I1v9Z8ykVfHGsLVhew/s1600/house%2Bworks%2Bdollhouse%2Bcabinet.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="366" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-v0DemPI_S1M/VwMZIfrXydI/AAAAAAAAJGY/SZq45mDcYP8C8J9I1v9Z8ykVfHGsLVhew/s400/house%2Bworks%2Bdollhouse%2Bcabinet.jpg" width="400" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here is a picture of what the cabinets I purchased are supposed to look like once assembled. They had raised panel style doors that really weren't what I was looking for for my little modern farmhouse. What I did like about these cabinets was that they came in various widths to mimic standard cabinet sizes (e.g., 3" = 36", 1.5" =18", etc.) and I had the option of getting cabinets with drawers or doors. It was kind of like planning a real kitchen. I took a bit of a gamble when ordering the cabinets hoping that since they were DIY kits that I would be able to make them into flat panels using the backsides. Once I received the kits and started looking at how to assemble them there was a little more work needed to see my vision through. I thought that I'd share what I did below in case anyone else is as crazy as I am to modify dollhouse cabinets!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DxlpEWp0QWw/VwMW5w3iNnI/AAAAAAAAJGE/oT0-mLo8dT0OPzuVqEnVTxyMOjge8l1Jg/s1600/diy%2Bdollhouse%2Bcabinet.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DxlpEWp0QWw/VwMW5w3iNnI/AAAAAAAAJGE/oT0-mLo8dT0OPzuVqEnVTxyMOjge8l1Jg/s1600/diy%2Bdollhouse%2Bcabinet.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WvvKOB2svZM/VwMW51nXl5I/AAAAAAAAJGI/cYt23wFjZUUro_1laCF9he68AYDfyba-A/s1600/modified%2Bcabinet%2Bdoors.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WvvKOB2svZM/VwMW51nXl5I/AAAAAAAAJGI/cYt23wFjZUUro_1laCF9he68AYDfyba-A/s1600/modified%2Bcabinet%2Bdoors.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<u>Modifying the doors</u>:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I wasn't able to make the doors into flat panels since there was additional moulding around the door that had to be glued on. However, when I put this moulding on the flat side of the door I was able to get a shaker style door which still worked for my modern farmhouse look. The one thing that I wasn't anticipating having to do was to sand off pretty much all of the raised portion of the doors. I had to do this because the panel was preventing the doors from closing flush to the cabinets. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WMOmz_ParDc/VwMW5yIOBgI/AAAAAAAAJGM/2J8RSABIut0g5VlMgNJ93pd63lMksww6w/s1600/dollhouse%2Bkitchen%2Bcabinet%2Bdrawers.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-WMOmz_ParDc/VwMW5yIOBgI/AAAAAAAAJGM/2J8RSABIut0g5VlMgNJ93pd63lMksww6w/s1600/dollhouse%2Bkitchen%2Bcabinet%2Bdrawers.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The picture above shows the drawers before and after sanding. Again, in order for the drawer to slide all the way into the cabinets I had to sand off the raised panels. I then slid the drawers in backwards so that the back became the front and I ended up with some lovely simple flat panel drawer fronts.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

I'm a little late getting this calendar out, but I may just squeak it in on the 1st of April yet! We've had a very crazy week where we spent three days in the emergency with my oldest. He fell on Tuesday and what was believed to be a fracture was likely just a dislocated elbow. He had a cast on for a couple of days and was in a lot of pain until we ended up returning to the emergency for a third time. He's now out of the cast and feeling so much better. We are all relieved, but somewhat exhausted from all the excitement. So long story short, getting this post written any earlier this week was just not possible and I hope you can understand and enjoy this months printable calendar. </div>

Have a lovely weekend friends!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2010234535625881956.post-79235735832819234702016-03-01T07:00:00.000-05:002016-03-01T13:53:22.623-05:00Little Modern Farmhouse Progress and an Announcement!<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
I've been working hard at getting my dollhouse back together. If you remember <a href="http://www.nalleshouse.com/2016/02/introducing-my-little-modern-farmhouse.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">my last dollhouse post</a>, I had taken the whole thing apart. It's now more or less back together and I'm happy to say that I achieved my goal of creating a front-opening dollhouse. The exterior is not quite finished. It still needs trim, touch-ups and doors, but I'm happy with how far this little house has come. <br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hjTKNAD5BVs/VtT1zQck4oI/AAAAAAAAJEI/xs1NoXm0Ulc/s1600/little%2Bmodern%2Bfarmhouse.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-hjTKNAD5BVs/VtT1zQck4oI/AAAAAAAAJEI/xs1NoXm0Ulc/s1600/little%2Bmodern%2Bfarmhouse.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The house is quite a bit smaller now which will make it more manageable to keep in our small house. For the exterior I went with white, grey and black. I replaced the windows since the plexiglass had completely yellowed and I added some new more modern mullions. I was hoping to not have any shutters on the house, but the old shutters were so well glued that they damaged the siding on the house. I ended up making new shutters that are a little more farmhouse in style and I quite like the light grey. It's the same colour that is on my office wall. I had ideas to add a standing seam detail to the roof so that it would look like a metal roof, but I kind of like it plain as well.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UDHtAtAS1gs/VrlgapLbrkI/AAAAAAAAJCE/DxsNc8qL2GM/s1600/little%2Bmodern%2Bfarmhouse%2Bbefore%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-UDHtAtAS1gs/VrlgapLbrkI/AAAAAAAAJCE/DxsNc8qL2GM/s1600/little%2Bmodern%2Bfarmhouse%2Bbefore%2B3.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Just for your reference, here is what the house looked like before.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qduK9oMzvgM/VtTv2mQ3jqI/AAAAAAAAJDY/WBgUa5222qk/s1600/little%2Bmodern%2Bfarmhouse%2Bprogress%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://4.bp.blogspot.com/-qduK9oMzvgM/VtTv2mQ3jqI/AAAAAAAAJDY/WBgUa5222qk/s1600/little%2Bmodern%2Bfarmhouse%2Bprogress%2B2.jpg" /></a></div>
To modify the house we started by cutting back the footprint. I removed the front part under the gable that protruded out as well as the two-tier balcony across the front and side. In this picture you can see how the new back was attached and the new footprint.<br />
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-a6vGrqR5dLc/VtT1zGbxMiI/AAAAAAAAJEE/xgNpzD-t6bE/s1600/little%2Bmodern%2Bfarmhouse%2Bprogress.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-a6vGrqR5dLc/VtT1zGbxMiI/AAAAAAAAJEE/xgNpzD-t6bE/s1600/little%2Bmodern%2Bfarmhouse%2Bprogress.jpg" /></a><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is right before the front panels and roof were attached. I changed the room layouts a little as well. I'm planning on having a kitchen, living room, bedroom, bathroom, a stair hall and two kids bedrooms. I'm also really happy that I was able to incorporate the original side-opening door to the house as well. There will be access from the front and one side! A little note about the Peppa Pig family in this picture: Originally my youngest said that his Peppa Pig family would live in the house, but ended up changing his mind and wanted the squirrel family to live in this house instead. :)</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Now for a really fun announcement! I was asked by Cassie from <a href="http://primitiveandproper.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Primitive and Proper</a> to join her and a couple of other bloggers, Alice from <a href="http://www.thoughtsfromalice.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Thoughts from Alice</a> and Emy from <a href="http://www.semiglossdesign.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Semi Gloss Design</a> in a dollhouse challenge which we're calling "Dollhouse Therapy". We're all going to be working on completing our dollhouses over the next few months and we'll be sharing the progress on our blogs. In addition, since we have found this little dollhouse hobby so fun, we would like to challenge you to join us! You can choose to make over a whole dollhouse or just a room or two. It's completely up to you. For the month of March we'll be getting our dollhouses ready to decorate and throughout the months of April, May and June we'll challenge ourselves (and you!) to finish off a room or two. On the last Tuesday of April, May and June there will be a linky party where you can share the room you've been working on. On the final link party we will be hosting a giveaway for $100 from miniatures.com!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here are some sneak peeks at what my fellow dollhouse friends are working on:</div>

Happy Leap Day! I have the March printable calendar for you today. I can't believe that Easter is coming up in just a few short weeks. Prior to that my oldest has two weeks off for March Break. We're going to have lots of holidays around here this month (or at least my son will since I have to work). This month's calendar features some cute bunnies. <a href="http://www.nalleshouse.com/2015/03/some-things-bunny.html" target="_blank">I kind of have a thing for them</a> especially at Easter. I thought I would be able to get away with using some in my calendar since we are celebrating Easter this month. </div>

Yesterday morning I did not have any idea what I was going to do for my oldest's class valentines. All I had were some treats my son had picked out: Kinder eggs and stickers. I tried thinking of something "egg" related to make a valentine for, but I really couldn't think of anything simple enough to pull off in one day. I ended up taking inspiration from all the paper airplanes scattered around our living room for the valentines. I quickly drew a paper airplane on the chalkboard in our kitchen and had my little man sit in front of it for a picture.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_QET71YqWO8/Vr1QsPges4I/AAAAAAAAJCU/WdJZS6UdeDM/s1600/paper%2Bairplane%2Bvalentine%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://2.bp.blogspot.com/-_QET71YqWO8/Vr1QsPges4I/AAAAAAAAJCU/WdJZS6UdeDM/s1600/paper%2Bairplane%2Bvalentine%2B1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2vaxwB8_D7M/Vr1QsBlCjJI/AAAAAAAAJCY/j3M6kN6yc0M/s1600/paper%2Bairplane%2Bvalentine%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-2vaxwB8_D7M/Vr1QsBlCjJI/AAAAAAAAJCY/j3M6kN6yc0M/s1600/paper%2Bairplane%2Bvalentine%2B3.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This is the picture I went with and after I printed the cards out I felt they could use something a little extra. I glued on a mini paper airplane over the one on the chalkboard which instantly made the card a little more fun!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YZNQSweZMNY/Vr1QsIZl7QI/AAAAAAAAJCQ/GccLxKjuk6s/s1600/paper%2Bairplane%2Bvalentine%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-YZNQSweZMNY/Vr1QsIZl7QI/AAAAAAAAJCQ/GccLxKjuk6s/s1600/paper%2Bairplane%2Bvalentine%2B2.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In addition to photographing and making the cards, I also popped over to Michael's and grabbed some cookie bags and some cute wooden clothespins to package the treats my little guy had chosen. I'll admit that the eggs and stickers don't have a lot to do with paper airplanes, but all these things put together are some of his very favourite.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">

I also thought I'd share this picture that I'm going to use for the grandparents' cards. <3Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2010234535625881956.post-38099471662073861012016-02-09T07:00:00.000-05:002016-02-09T07:00:06.099-05:00Introducing My Little Modern Farmhouse<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So, I've started renovating a farmhouse. It's one that Hubby and I built when we were dating in high school. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UDHtAtAS1gs/VrlgapLbrkI/AAAAAAAAJCA/Smvv1yLcoek/s1600/little%2Bmodern%2Bfarmhouse%2Bbefore%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-UDHtAtAS1gs/VrlgapLbrkI/AAAAAAAAJCA/Smvv1yLcoek/s1600/little%2Bmodern%2Bfarmhouse%2Bbefore%2B3.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Both the exterior and interior need a lot of work and updating. I'm hoping to turn this country farmhouse into a modern farmhouse. The green and yellow colour scheme must go and the whole layout of the house needs to change.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0P_Qbas_GcU/VrldGFMJjOI/AAAAAAAAJBk/hwBOfUME7eY/s1600/little%2Bmodern%2Bfarmhouse%2Bbefore.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://1.bp.blogspot.com/-0P_Qbas_GcU/VrldGFMJjOI/AAAAAAAAJBk/hwBOfUME7eY/s1600/little%2Bmodern%2Bfarmhouse%2Bbefore.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Hubby and I started by removing the roof and scraping off lots and lots of wallpaper. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Om0lxj5h3sg/VrlelopnlpI/AAAAAAAAJBw/KIvgE7NI8ss/s1600/little%2Bmodern%2Bfarmhouse%2Bbefore%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://3.bp.blogspot.com/-Om0lxj5h3sg/VrlelopnlpI/AAAAAAAAJBw/KIvgE7NI8ss/s1600/little%2Bmodern%2Bfarmhouse%2Bbefore%2B2.jpg" /></a></div>
However, one thing led to another and our farmhouse ended up like this. It looks like we have to rebuild. This is definitely a concerning site, but there is a plan! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I'm so happy to finally share a few pictures of our basement Sauna renovation! This space is just one part of our entire basement renovation that we've been working on slowly for quite some time now. For this post I also had the opportunity to work with <a href="http://www.finnstyle.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">FinnStyle</a>. They provided me with some really beautiful products for our newly finished sauna. They've also sponsored a really great giveaway and you can find all the details on how to enter at the end of this post.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Our Sauna space is truly multifunctional. It includes the sauna, bathroom, a mini "pukuhuone" (dressing room) and even our laundry! Today I'm showing you everything other than the laundry. I'll hopefully share that with you soon as well. I'm going to start with the little dressing/cooling off area. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eW2HUNBR5v0/VrAlb8cjCeI/AAAAAAAAI_0/EM-bEHhjq2E/s1600/modern%2Bsauna%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-eW2HUNBR5v0/VrAlb8cjCeI/AAAAAAAAI_0/EM-bEHhjq2E/s1600/modern%2Bsauna%2B1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dFfSZd4YNx4/VrFWdqLBxJI/AAAAAAAAJAE/FMX-jA__tAI/s1600/modern%2Bsauna%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-dFfSZd4YNx4/VrFWdqLBxJI/AAAAAAAAJAE/FMX-jA__tAI/s1600/modern%2Bsauna%2B2.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DxBDV5aRIsM/VrFWd1LtVNI/AAAAAAAAJAI/rvZK98d2hTc/s1600/modern%2Bsauna%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-DxBDV5aRIsM/VrFWd1LtVNI/AAAAAAAAJAI/rvZK98d2hTc/s1600/modern%2Bsauna%2B3.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This area consists of a couple of stools some hooks and storage for our shampoo, soap, washcloths, etc. The hooks are mostly DIY except for the large grey dot. I used various knobs from the hardware store (some painted and some not) as well as a wooden doll head to create the hooks. I simply added double ended screws to them and mounted them to the wall in a random pattern. I love that they're a little quirky and incorporate some of my favourite colours. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I love the Marimekko Unikko towels that FinnStyle provided. I ended up getting more neutral bath towels and then went a little crazy with the washcloths getting one in every colour so that each member of the family could have their own colour.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YQV4lWslids/VrFfu_A9iWI/AAAAAAAAJA4/xGg4Bq2Ks2E/s1600/modern%2Bsauna%2B4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-YQV4lWslids/VrFfu_A9iWI/AAAAAAAAJA4/xGg4Bq2Ks2E/s1600/modern%2Bsauna%2B4.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I think this shot gives you an idea of the layout of the Sauna and bathroom. The laundry area and commode are behind me in this photo. I decided to forgo a soap niche in the shower since our wall tiles are so large. I felt that the niche would end up looking too tall since the height of one tile was too short for a shampoo, but two tiles would make it look super oversized. I came up with a really inexpensive solution when I found some wall-mounted organizers from Ikea.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZNhbvwPcFNA/VrFbL6sjjEI/AAAAAAAAJAg/eGfnWzIlbC8/s1600/modern%2Bsauna%2B5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-ZNhbvwPcFNA/VrFbL6sjjEI/AAAAAAAAJAg/eGfnWzIlbC8/s1600/modern%2Bsauna%2B5.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
Here's a shot of the wood in our sauna. It's a really light wood that we actually have had and moved with us to two houses before it finally found it's home here. The Marimekko towel and this super minimal sauna bucket look lovely against the light wood.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RZruIn29xRY/VrFhLWlcV_I/AAAAAAAAJBE/htLIfQCtfuM/s1600/modern%2Bsauna%2B7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-RZruIn29xRY/VrFhLWlcV_I/AAAAAAAAJBE/htLIfQCtfuM/s1600/modern%2Bsauna%2B7.jpg" /></a></div>

<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-i4TdH5LoSF0/VrFfco7klwI/AAAAAAAAJAs/fAfHzQpnYoU/s1600/scandinavian%2Bbathroom%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-i4TdH5LoSF0/VrFfco7klwI/AAAAAAAAJAs/fAfHzQpnYoU/s1600/scandinavian%2Bbathroom%2B2.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Lastly, Is the vanity area. I had the vanity cupboard made from some quarter sawn white oak that I found at a lumber mill. I added some pulls that I made from a little girl's belt and some brass screws. We hired out the tiling for the floors and the shower walls, but I did the little backsplash behind the vanity. The colour of the tiles is a little off due to the lighting in this space, but in actuality they are a light minty green-grey. The mirror above the vanity was also another DIY project. I had hubby cut down a mirror from the hardware store and use the same wood used in the vanity to make a little shelf. Another Marimekko towel hangs from a DIY towel clip. I'm going to post the DIY's for a few of these projects soon. </div>
<br />

Another month has just zipped by. We spent most of January fighting the flu which explains the silence here on the blog. I did just finish taking photos of our basement sauna/bathroom renovation which I am hoping to post this week along with a really great giveaway! I'm happy with how the space turned out so stay tuned!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
This month's calendar is an elegant black, grey and blush feather number. I considered doing something with hearts for Valentine's Day, but for some reason I was feeling the feathers this year. The calendar is my own design using clipart that I found <a href="http://angiemakes.com/free-feather-clip-art/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here</a>. You can find the DIY for my calendar holder<a href="http://www.nalleshouse.com/2015/01/2015-printable-calendar.html" target="_blank"> here</a>.</div>

I had some requests to release all the calendars at once this year, however since our January turned into a flu fighting month I just didn't have the time to get them together. For now I'm sticking to my usual monthly schedule. I hope you continue to enjoy these monthly calendars and have a really lovely week!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2010234535625881956.post-9842725647251899442016-01-01T10:38:00.003-05:002016-01-01T10:55:23.313-05:00Printable 2016 Calendar<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Happy New Year! This new year really crept up on me! We've had a relaxing holiday. I hope yours has been lovely as well. Have you thought of New Year's goals? I haven't really given them much thought. I know I would love to get some things finished up around our house. Our basement is 85-90% finished, but there are a ton of little things to finish off and some finishes to source. I know I haven't been very good about posting the progress on our basement and I'm hoping to share some of that space here on the blog this year. I do have a sauna post coming up soon along with a fun giveaway though. I'm not planning on trying any new diets or changing my fitness routine too much (I've been doing barre workouts at home throughout the past year and they're still challenging!). Life seems to be just going by faster and faster and overall, I would just like to slow down and really be present in both the exciting and mundane bits of life.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
In all my Christmas business I had completely forgotten about my printable 2016 calendar, but I do have January's calendar ready for you today on the 1st of January. I think I'm going to continue with releasing one each month, but I'm open to suggestions from you should you like me to release them all at once.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
For January I chose a couple of patterns I found from <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/189714203031346695/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here</a> and <a href="https://www.pinterest.com/pin/189714203031346696/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">here</a> for my design. The colours are soft and muted which is something I felt was fitting after all the business of Christmas and the holidays. I do still like <a href="http://www.nalleshouse.com/2015/01/2015-printable-calendar.html" target="_blank">my little calendar holder</a> I made last year. I don't know if you remember that I thought it looked a little like a chopping board when I first made it. It must have grown on me. :)</div>

The happiest of New Years to you! </div>
It's Christmas Eve and I'm popping in to share a little craft I made with my boys as well as our Christmas tree since I didn't yet have it up for the Christmas home tour. The craft I made with the boys was super simple. We made banners exactly the same way as last year (find the tutorial <a href="http://www.nalleshouse.com/2014/12/modern-kids-christmas-craft.html" target="_blank">here</a>) and added some wood stickers from the craft store to them in a pattern. I had the boys paint the wood stickers and then we just stuck them onto the banners using a ruler as a guide to keep them relatively straight. I love how they turned out and my oldest wanted to use red in his wall hanging and once it came time to put the trees on. He added a green one for good measure. Little brother was not as picky and mostly enjoyed painting using his favourite colour green.<br />

Here's a shot of the living room with our tree. The boys decorated it all by themselves. They pulled over the kitchen stools in order to reach the higher branches. I personally love how it turned out including the ornaments that touch the floor. <br />
<br />
I'm off to roast our Turkey for tonight's birthday party for Jesus as my boys have been calling our Christmas celebration. I hope that your Christmas is filled with the hope that came on this very Holy night.<br />

</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Today, I am so happy to be sharing a super simple DIY Scandinavian Christmas tree skirt featuring some beautiful Marimekko fabric from <a href="http://www.finnstyle.com/" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">FinnStyle</a>. Making a tree skirt was on the top of my Christmas DIY to do list. I love the Scandinavian style of tree skirt where the skirt is more like a little carpet that sits under the tree stand/basket. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
When browsing Finnstyle's selection of Marimekko fabrics I instantly knew that the <a href="http://www.finnstyle.com/kanteleen-upholstery-fabric.html" rel="nofollow" target="_blank">Kanteleen Kutsu </a>fabric would be perfect for my boys' wooden dowel Christmas tree. I think all the forest animals in this fabric are perfect for children, but it is still sophisticated enough to be used in an adult space as well. I also chose this fabric since it is an upholstery weight which made this sewing project a snap since the fabric didn't require any additional reinforcement (e.g., inter-facing). I used some mint green bias tape to finish the edges of my Christmas tree skirt to tie in with all the soft colours I've been using in my Christmas decor this year. I really love how the tree skirt turned out and am trying to think of a way to keep it out all year long in our home. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A little further down in this post you'll find the how to. I made the skirt for this tree to be a little smaller in proportion with the tree, but I do also provide tips on how to make a larger tree skirt.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
DIY SCANDINAVIAN CHRISTMAS TREE SKIRT:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Materials: </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
A) 100 cm to 150 cm of heavy weight fabric or lighter weight fabric plus an equal amount of interfacing. The skirt pictured here is just under 90 cm, but you can make your skirt as wide as your fabric allows (i.e., if your fabric is 145 cm wide then you will be able to make a skirt that is 145 cm in diameter).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
B) double fold bias tape - use the diameter x pi calculation to determine how much bias tape you will need</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
C) coordinating thread</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
How To:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
1) Cut out a circle from your fabric to the size you have selected. I used our living room coffee table to trace a circle on the back of the fabric to cut out my tree skirt. :) However, you can make your own compass by attaching a pencil to a string that is the length of the radius of the tree skirt(circle). Just place the string in the centre of the fabric and pull it taut and pivot around creating a circle.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
2) Zig zag or serge around the edge of your circle to prevent fraying</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
3) Attach the double fold bias tape by opening up one of the folds and with right sides of the fabric and bias tape together stitch the tape into place following the crease from the fold in the bias tape.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
4) Turn the rest of the bias tape over to the back of the fabric enclosing the raw edge of the tree skirt. Once the tape is turned over and secured in place stitch close to the inner edge of the bias tape on the right side of the fabric catching the back side of the tape that you folded over.</div>

This Christmas season seems to be just flying by! I feel like my to do list is a mile long, but I'm also trying to enjoy the little moments with my family. Today, I'm crossing off the tutorial for the wooden bead stars off my blogging to do list. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tApohg91Ggw/VmelPJlScrI/AAAAAAAAI7M/uMnUG5QwH-0/s1600/DIY%2BWooden%2BBead%2BStar%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-tApohg91Ggw/VmelPJlScrI/AAAAAAAAI7M/uMnUG5QwH-0/s1600/DIY%2BWooden%2BBead%2BStar%2B1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You may remember these beaded stars from my Christmas home tour. I'm really pleased with how they turned out. They are fairly quick to make too. The smaller size would make a lovely ornament.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tBw6u1JYoAg/VmeopID_YlI/AAAAAAAAI7o/1z6Pz9LroFo/s1600/DIY%2BWooden%2BBead%2BStar%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-tBw6u1JYoAg/VmeopID_YlI/AAAAAAAAI7o/1z6Pz9LroFo/s1600/DIY%2BWooden%2BBead%2BStar%2B3.jpg" /></a></div>

My Christmas mantel also features a couple of other wooden stars that I made. The large one is a star cut out of plywood which I painted and the small one by the picture frame is simply a string of beads on a wire that was bent into the shape of a star. Below you'll find the tutorial for the more intircate stars that are on the right side of the mantel.<br />
<br />
DIY WOODEN BEAD STARS<br />
<br />
1. Gather your materials: a) Wire with a gauge that corresponds to the size of your beads (you want the wire to be strong/stiff enough to support the weight of the beads)<br />
b) 48 wooden beads<br />
<br />
2. Take your wire and string on 5 beads leave a small length of wire on one end and the majority of the wire on the other end.<br />
<br />
3. Take the first bead that you strung and make the first point of the star by twisting the two lengths of wire together to hold the bead in place.<br />
<br />
4. Thread the short length of wire through the second bead as shown in the photo below.<br />
<br />
5. String another two beads onto the short length of wire and push beads three and four from step 2 close to the other beads.<br />
<br />
6. Thread the short length of wire through the fifth bead from step 2 in the same way as you did in step three. Twist the short and long lengths of wire together to create your first star point. (from this point on you will be working with the long length of wire)<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
*the how to continues after the photo below</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-icg7zdjSmbo/VmelPC9ciYI/AAAAAAAAI7Q/KN0eX6V8di4/s1600/DIY%2Bwooden%2Bbead%2Bstar%2Bhow%2Bto%2Bpart%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-icg7zdjSmbo/VmelPC9ciYI/AAAAAAAAI7Q/KN0eX6V8di4/s1600/DIY%2Bwooden%2Bbead%2Bstar%2Bhow%2Bto%2Bpart%2B1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
7. To make your next tip, string on 6 beads to the long length of wire. Secure the top bead as you did in step 2 by twisting the wire at the base of the bead.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
8. Insert the end of the wire back through the second bead.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
9. String on two more beads to the wire.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
10. & 11. Thread the wire end through the fifth bead that you strung on initially skipping over two beads.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
12. Repeat steps 7-11 four more times. When you have made all six points of your star twist the short length of wire and whatever wire you have left from the long length of wire together a few times to close the star. Then cut the excess wire off. You can use a string/twine inserted through one of the tip beads to create a hanger.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HdyxwuyZt-0/VmelPKJ2KPI/AAAAAAAAI7I/3lZOqhccDZ4/s1600/DIY%2Bwooden%2Bbead%2Bstar%2Bhow%2Bto%2Bpart%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-HdyxwuyZt-0/VmelPKJ2KPI/AAAAAAAAI7I/3lZOqhccDZ4/s1600/DIY%2Bwooden%2Bbead%2Bstar%2Bhow%2Bto%2Bpart%2B2.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
There are a lot of steps to this how to and I hope the pictures will help. Let me know if you have any questions.</div>

One last look at our mantel. I'm hoping that later this week we'll have a chance to go cut down our Christmas tree and really make our living room feel cozy for Christmas. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Today is my turn to share our Christmas home tour as a part of the Canadian Bloggers Christmas Home Tours. Make sure you check out the links at the bottom of this post to see all of the other bloggers sharing their gorgeous homes.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For our Scandinavian Christmas home I've decided to go with a little more colour. My boys are always asking for more colour and this year I ended up DIYing some colourful decorations. I chose to go with the pastels that I seem to be bringing into our home a lot lately. In today's tour you'll see what we have up so far. I'm sure that I'll be decorating and DIYing throughout December which means things will likely change a little before Christmas Eve. You also won't see our Christmas tree in these photos. I couldn't bring myself to break our Finnish tradition of waiting until much closer to Christmas to go and cut down our tree (traditionally Finns in the past waited until Christmas Eve to get their trees). I'm also a little petrified of the tree completely drying out before Christmas if I was to put it up in November. I do have lots of greenery and other decor that I'd love to show you so I hope you don't mind touring my home without the Christmas tree. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
For the tour today I'm going to take you in a bit of a loop through the main living spaces of our 60s ranch home starting in the living room. Below is the view you would have if you were to stand in our entry looking into the living room. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0bS9Z07noRA/Vl5AYjCBZxI/AAAAAAAAI4Y/MBwV1UAdr3w/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BLiving%2BRoom%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-0bS9Z07noRA/Vl5AYjCBZxI/AAAAAAAAI4Y/MBwV1UAdr3w/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BLiving%2BRoom%2B2.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The fireplace is the focal point of our long and narrow living room. I decided to decorate the fireplace with a variety of wooden stars that I made (I'll be sharing the DIY for these soon) and a garland I made from pine branches.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-74fIXZpvbS4/Vl5FhX8FaxI/AAAAAAAAI5E/mxE-tDugEg0/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BLiving%2BRoom%2B6.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-74fIXZpvbS4/Vl5FhX8FaxI/AAAAAAAAI5E/mxE-tDugEg0/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BLiving%2BRoom%2B6.jpg" /></a></div>
On the coffee table I've displayed my <a href="http://www.nalleshouse.com/2013/12/diy-aarikka-inspired-jingle-bell-elves.html" target="_blank">DIY elf family</a> and my Kahler Christmas tree candle holders. I still need to find some small candles to put in these trees. Nalle (our dog) is also missing from the elf family. I blame the boys since he was there the night before I took these pictures.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--h9jMbt-vOE/Vl5EWntTZYI/AAAAAAAAI4w/sAgLXFXNg2g/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BLiving%2BRoom%2B5.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/--h9jMbt-vOE/Vl5EWntTZYI/AAAAAAAAI4w/sAgLXFXNg2g/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BLiving%2BRoom%2B5.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NTK0K6NlBbk/Vl5FhX4CsII/AAAAAAAAI5A/D1XO1yj7RGc/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BLiving%2BRoom%2B7.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/-NTK0K6NlBbk/Vl5FhX4CsII/AAAAAAAAI5A/D1XO1yj7RGc/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BLiving%2BRoom%2B7.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I did dig up a small pine tree and put it in a planter that I had on the deck in the summer. I'm hoping I'll be able to replant it in the spring. The tree is perfectly Charlie Brown. I also think it's a nice way to display a few ornaments while we wait to get our real Christmas tree. You'll see that I like to hang our ornaments throughout the house in early December so that we can enjoy them throughout the month.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TfeS6UzjisM/Vl5QHiqz7hI/AAAAAAAAI58/D0o-fLo1yIs/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BLiving%2BRoom%2B4_edited-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-TfeS6UzjisM/Vl5QHiqz7hI/AAAAAAAAI58/D0o-fLo1yIs/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BLiving%2BRoom%2B4_edited-1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oTbgLMrRda0/Vl5CxbzA6QI/AAAAAAAAI4k/VAst_t1h0T8/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BLiving%2BRoom%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-oTbgLMrRda0/Vl5CxbzA6QI/AAAAAAAAI4k/VAst_t1h0T8/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BLiving%2BRoom%2B3.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The opposite corner of our living room is very simply decorated. My grandmother's teak sewing table is the perfect spot for our nativity. I also like that our house tissue holder goes with the Scandinavian Christmas feel (usually I would have to hide the tissue box when taking photos of the house).</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bMJnkhWgBUU/Vl4_g_3OwYI/AAAAAAAAI4Q/s5m7c1VC2Sw/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BLiving%2BRoom%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-bMJnkhWgBUU/Vl4_g_3OwYI/AAAAAAAAI4Q/s5m7c1VC2Sw/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BLiving%2BRoom%2B1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is another corner of our living room. It's opposite of the sofa in the previous picture. This year I went to the antique mall and got that vintage ceramic Christmas tree. My grandmother had one and admiring all the little lights was one of my favourite memories of my childhood. I couldn't forget my <a href="http://www.nalleshouse.com/2013/11/diy-modern-paper-tree-garlands.html" target="_blank">black Christmas tree garland</a> from two years ago. I ended up cutting the trees a little smaller this year so that I could fit a few more on the garland.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-I9yyOcTNWwo/Vl42piyh1lI/AAAAAAAAI3c/ZrE8ulta-Qc/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BEntry%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-I9yyOcTNWwo/Vl42piyh1lI/AAAAAAAAI3c/ZrE8ulta-Qc/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BEntry%2B1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Now we're passing our entry on our way to my workspace which is opposite of the living room. If you're coming into our house the living room is on your right and my workspace is on the left. The entry has some very simple decorations: a couple of paper stars and more pine branches in vases.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-y-L9sRyMSP0/Vl5Nw5kh32I/AAAAAAAAI5o/9e1DZCpyslA/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BWorkspace.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-y-L9sRyMSP0/Vl5Nw5kh32I/AAAAAAAAI5o/9e1DZCpyslA/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BWorkspace.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P6g2QLCvEUk/Vl5Ojv933YI/AAAAAAAAI5w/le9Pn-c8zP8/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BWorkspace%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-P6g2QLCvEUk/Vl5Ojv933YI/AAAAAAAAI5w/le9Pn-c8zP8/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BWorkspace%2B2.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In the workspace I've kept things simple with a few bottle brush trees and the boys' wooden dowel advent tree. We had the tree in their room originally, but it was getting a little abused so I moved it in here. I love the glow of the star lights in the evening when I'm working in here.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-E5zk7fIcZHo/Vl45RlP4H2I/AAAAAAAAI3o/liD582fd684/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BEntry%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-E5zk7fIcZHo/Vl45RlP4H2I/AAAAAAAAI3o/liD582fd684/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BEntry%2B2.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We're now back in the entry about to enter the kitchen. I hung some globe lights in front of the mirror to greet guests.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LrkwdUxEEXE/Vl46D-pZbdI/AAAAAAAAI3w/rHZQ4UbpHGM/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BKitchen%2B1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-LrkwdUxEEXE/Vl46D-pZbdI/AAAAAAAAI3w/rHZQ4UbpHGM/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BKitchen%2B1.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
You probably got a peek at the chalkboard in the kitchen from the entry too. I very roughly and randomly drew some trees on it. I used a picture I found on Pinterest as a guide.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7N6yESYI41M/Vl49tg7AtcI/AAAAAAAAI4E/MctQxCFp22c/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BKitchen%2B3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/-7N6yESYI41M/Vl49tg7AtcI/AAAAAAAAI4E/MctQxCFp22c/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BKitchen%2B3.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H_kR5ORXmZM/Vl49O2tAkqI/AAAAAAAAI38/wdKGSO0K8bc/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BKitchen%2B2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/-H_kR5ORXmZM/Vl49O2tAkqI/AAAAAAAAI38/wdKGSO0K8bc/s1600/Nalle%2527s%2BHouse%2BChristmas%2BKitchen%2B2.jpg" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is our floating shelf in our kitchen. I hung a few of the DIY ornaments I have made over the years on a dowel and hung it around a deer hook I found at Target in the fall. The Maribowl holds some of the origami Christmas trees I made last year and the little Christmas tree is actually sitting in a coffee mug.</div>

As you walk through our kitchen you end up in the dining room. You may notice some new chairs in there. I didn't really intend on buying new chairs, but the night before I took these photos I went to HomeSense to try and track down some affordable fairy lights and came home with a couple of pink Eames-style chairs. I think they're kind of fun and actually super comfortable and sturdy for knockoffs. I'm a tad worried that I may become tired of the pink, but since they were so reasonably priced I may give them a go. I think they would work well in my office if they don't stay in this room.</div>

I love lighting the candles now for advent.</div>

I'm so happy with the centrepiece I put together for the dining table. I used the wood veneer paper chain I made a couple of years ago, some pine branches, some of the paper star ornaments I made this year and a few Iittala votive candle holders. I love how simple it is. You can also see from the above picture that we've now made it back to the living room.</div>
