Our Sauna/Bathroom & Giveaway!

I'm so happy to finally share a few pictures of our basement Sauna renovation!  This space is just one part of our entire basement renovation that we've been working on slowly for quite some time now.  For this post I also had the opportunity to work with FinnStyle.  They provided me with some really beautiful products for our newly finished sauna.  They've also sponsored a really great giveaway and you can find all the details on how to enter at the end of this post.

Our Sauna space is truly multifunctional.  It includes the sauna, bathroom, a mini "pukuhuone" (dressing room) and even our laundry!  Today I'm showing you everything other than the laundry.  I'll hopefully share that with you soon as well.  I'm going to start with the little dressing/cooling off area.
This area consists of a couple of stools some hooks and storage for our shampoo, soap, washcloths, etc.  The hooks are mostly DIY except for the large grey dot.  I used various knobs from the hardware store (some painted and some not) as well as a wooden doll head to create the hooks.  I simply added double ended screws to them and mounted them to the wall in a random pattern.  I love that they're a little quirky and incorporate some of my favourite colours.

I love the Marimekko Unikko towels that FinnStyle provided.  I ended up getting more neutral bath towels and then went a little crazy with the washcloths getting one in every colour so that each member of the family could have their own colour.

I think this shot gives you an idea of the layout of the Sauna and bathroom.   The laundry area and commode are behind me in this photo.  I decided to forgo a soap niche in the shower since our wall tiles are so large.  I felt that the niche would end up looking too tall since the height of one tile was too short for a shampoo, but two tiles would make it look super oversized.  I came up with a really inexpensive solution when I found some wall-mounted organizers from Ikea.

Here's a shot of the wood in our sauna.  It's a really light wood that we actually have had and moved with us to two houses before it finally found it's home here.  The Marimekko towel and this super minimal sauna bucket look lovely against the light wood.

Lastly, Is the vanity area.  I had the vanity cupboard made from some quarter sawn white oak that I found at a lumber mill.  I added some pulls that I made from a little girl's belt and some brass screws. We hired out the tiling for the floors and the shower walls, but I did the little backsplash behind the vanity.  The colour of the tiles is a little off due to the lighting in this space, but in actuality they are a light minty green-grey.  The mirror above the vanity was also another DIY project.  I had hubby cut down a mirror from the hardware store and use the same wood used in the vanity to make a little shelf.  Another Marimekko towel hangs from a DIY towel clip.  I'm going to post the DIY's for a few of these projects soon.

So I hope you enjoyed this little tour of our Sauna/Bathroom!  Now, for the giveaway!  One lucky reader is going to win a $50 credit towards FinnStyle!  They have so many lovely products including major Finnish brands such as Iittala and Marimekko that you may have a difficult time deciding on what to get (I know I did!).

  7. More, please! I love it! A beautiful blend of traditional and modern. I can't wait to build my own sauna. I'm Finnish-American and have been taking saunas since before I was born. I'd love more details and to see the inside of the sauna! What laudeliinat do you use? Where did you get the kiuas? Is it electric?
