A New Workspace

It's been pretty busy around our house this first month of 2015.  We have a few reno/decorating projects going as per usual.  Some of these are a little more exciting than others.  The exciting projects include our basement bathroom/sauna and the topic of this post:  I'm taking over the hubby's den and getting my very own workspace!  We've been working on the rough work in our basement bathroom/sauna during the beginning of this month and the tile work is to start the first week of February.  It feels so good to finally have something going on in the basement again!  I'll be sure to update you on our plans in another post.

The not so exciting projects include some electrical work for pot lights, light fixtures, home automation, etc. and some new insulation in the attic.  I've also sent our kitchen cabinet doors to be painted again!  It's a little frustrating, but I was having issues with staining.  Currently, we're back to no cupboard doors (hopefully for the last time!).

So now that you're up to speed on our projects, I can return back to the exciting news of my new workspace!  Hubby decided that having his office upstairs so close to the everyday activity didn't work for him especially when on business calls.  He decided to move downstairs and the den is left for me!
Here is what my little workspace in a corner of our living room looked like at the beginning of last year:

And here is a look at what the den looked like a couple of years ago:

The room is pretty small, but it has really lovely southern light from the large window.  I'm planning to give this space a much more Scandinavian modern feel more like my workspace above.  I thought I'd share a few inspirational images to let you get a sense for what I'm planning to do.

I'm planning to put my desk along the back wall (where the credenza and chair is in the above picture).  I asked some of you what your thoughts were on a wall to wall desk on Instagram and the vote was unanimously for it!

Another idea I've been tossing around is to paint an accent wall or to create a dipped wall around the whole room (i.e., paint the lower half of the wall a colour).  I'm trying to decide whether to go with grey,

mint green,

or a combination of the two.

I'm also going to try to incorporate a little toy storage in here for the boys to try and get some of it out of the living room.  The key word there is "try".  I'm sure the living room will continue to be filled with toys, but hopefully some smart storage will help!

I also really love a nice touch of blush in a space. :)

A couple of things that most of my inspiration pictures above incorporate are light floors and affordable Ikea furniture.  Our den has the original red oak floors that are super orange from aging and from the type of varnish they used back in the 60s.  I wonder if the hubby would let me change the flooring in there?  I would love to change all the floors in our house to a light, white-washed wood, but it's not in the plans or budget right now.  We have so many other renos still to do.  I may have to figure out a way to work with the floors.  I will be reusing much of my workspace furniture which includes the Ikea desk, Eames chair and String pocket shelf.  I'll also be adding a little more storage and possibly move my sewing table in there as well.  So lots of plans and I really am so excited to have a dedicated space to work and create!
