Hey friends! I think I just finished one of my most favourite DIYs ever! Do you remember this Mother's Day post where I blogged about some DIY inspiration? One of the inspirations/gift ideas was a hanging himmeli planter and now a few months later I have my own DIY version. I really love how my planter turned out. It's quite small in scale and when I found the tiny fern at Home Depot I knew it would be perfect for it. I love how the more traditional fern looks in this very modern planter. You can find the how to at the bottom of the post.
I hung my himmeli planter near the window in our dining room. I'm hoping it will be enough light for this little fern. As soon as the planter was hung, one little toddler went straight for it. He just dragged his Pikku Myy (from Moomins) chair over. At least it was just out of reach. :) You may also notice that I've taken down the airplane print and removed the wooden top to our floating sideboard. I was just trying to see what the sideboard would look like with a lighter top. We may have enough marble left over from our kitchen counters to be able to get a new top for it. We'll see, but for now I'm liking the lighter look and the chance to change up the art and styling.
Here's the How To:
DIY BRASS HIMMELI HANGING PLANTER
Materials:
- brass tubing (I used two packages of 1/8" tubing purchased from Hobby Lobby)
- planter/small bowl
- pipe cutter (Tech Guy had the one pictured above that he used for plumbing work in our basement)
- brass wire
How To:
* Caution: When the brass tubing is cut it is very sharp. Use work gloves while cutting and sand the cut ends.
Cut your brass tubing using the pipe cutter: Depending on the size and shape of your bowl you will need to cut: 3 small pieces (these will form the base on which the planter will sit. Try and cut them so that the resulting triangle is slightly smaller than the base of the planter), 6 medium sized pieces (these pieces should be length from the base of the planter plus a half inch) and 3 long pieces (these are the pieces that make the peak of the himmeli and should be cut so that they are long enough so that they pull the side pieces close to your planter when they are joined at the tip/hung).
To make the planter:
1. Take a long piece of brass wire (the length of the 3 small and 6 medium pieces combined plus extra for tying) and thread it through the 3 small pieces. Join the two ends of wire together to form a triangle.
2. Take the long end of the wire and thread on 2 medium sized pieces.
3. Make another triangle shape by twisting the wire around the next triangle peak.
4. Repeat steps 2 & 3 to create a third triangle
5. Repat steps 2 & 3 to create a fourth triangle. Tie off your brass wire with the short piece that was left from the first triangle you made. Trim your wire and tuck any leftover ends into the tubes.
6. Cut a piece of wire that is a couple inches longer than your longest tube piece. Attach one of the long tube pieces to each of the peaks of the medium triangles
7. Twist the extra wire at the top of each long tube piece all together to form the point of the planter. Trim the extra wire and tuck in loose ends in the tubing. Create a loop of wire that goes through the top point of the planter that you can use to hang the planter at a desired height.
8. Plant a small plant in your bowl and insert into the himmeli hanger and hang securely (we inserted a large twist hook directly into a ceiling joist)
Enjoy!

It is the perfect addition over there! These little hands can reach the fern in a very short time. Thanks for the full tutorial ... Have a wonderful week :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Christina. I'm hoping it won't be as interesting to him once he's big enough to reach it. ;) I already have a fiddle lead fig that is missing quite a few leaves thanks to one curious toddler.
Deletethis is awesome, anu! i didn't even know you could buy brass tubing. seriously!
ReplyDeleteThanks Cassie. I bought a few packs of the tubing and am sure there are some more projects for me in the future. :)
DeleteTaydellinen pikkuhimmeli! :) Nyt minunkin rupesi tekemaan mieli tuollaista.
ReplyDeleteI love how it turned out and I think it would look lovely in your home too. ;)

ReplyDeleteThanks Amy. :) You really should make one. They're really fun to make and quite addictive. ;)
DeleteThis is stunning! Just pinned and am going to be sharing on my FB page.
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Amy. That's so nice!
DeleteThis looks so good, it doesnt look like a DIY at all it looks like something very expensive you'd buy from a trendy shop! Love how its just out of reach of little hands too :)
ReplyDeleteThanks Michelle! I hope it stays out of reach long enough for it to become not so interesting. :)
DeleteI just love how that came out. This is so great!!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much Katja. :)
DeleteThat turned out fabulous! I didn't even know that you could buy brass tubing. Off to Hobby Lobby I go. Pinning!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the pin! I'm thinking I'll need to get some more too. :)
DeleteSo so pretty! I need one
ReplyDeleteI think I needed one too. It's probably why I've had it on my to do list for a few months now. ;)
DeleteLove this so much, Anu! I am definitely making one. I assume you go to hobby lobby while your in the states. I will we had them in canada. Is the brass wire also from hobby lobby?
ReplyDeleteCould you show how you hung it from the ceiling? I am always curious about that since the traditional offerings for ceiling hooks are... well, traditional and don't fit so well in a modern space. A small brass cup hook would look fine but wouldn't likely hold the weight. How did you hang it?
Thanks for the inspiration, I'm pinning this one and going on the hunt for brass tubing and wire.
Thanks Cred! Yes, I went to Hobby Lobby when we were last visiting the States. I would love to have a Hobby Lobby here. The tubing was in the model train section so I'm wondering if they would sell it at a model train/RC hobby type store?
DeleteThe planter is hung from the ceiling with a regular screw hook. We had to buy an extra long one (approx. 2" long) since our plaster/drywall is almost an inch thick. We wanted to make sure the hook would reach into the joist and be really secure. I actually left it the standard silver colour, but may paint it white in the future to help it blend more. I actually don't notice it that much as it is (maybe since our ceiling is textured plaster?). I hope that helps and I'd love to see a picture of your planter if you end up making one!
This is so beautiful!! Loooove it!!
ReplyDeleteWow love it!! beautiful, simple and elegant! Love that you chose to make it gold <3
ReplyDeleteAww, Himmelis never fail to amaze me! I still have to make one or a few myself…
ReplyDeleteThis is so awesome! Pinning for later:-) Have a wonderful day!
ReplyDeleteLove it! Thanks for sharing this great idea! Just curious what you'd suggest if I want to make one in black or silver? Paint or using different piping/wire materials? Steel maybe? Thanks for the advice! :)
ReplyDeleteI'm pretty sure there was another finish in the tubing at the hobby store. I can't remember for certain, but I think they had a silver option? I hope that helps!
DeleteYour hanging planter is awesome! I just pinned :)
