How was your weekend? Ours was busy with running errands and doing some spring cleaning. Not super exciting, but somewhat productive. Today, I'm going to share how we made the beaded cage light for my little black and white mini mudroom spruce up. I'm in love with the beaded detail on this light. It's suits my style to a 't'.
This light also ended up being a super inexpensive project. The beads were leftover from my wooden bead trivet project and the light was a $5 clearance find at Target. I got the light in teal (that's the only colour that was left when I purchased it) and initially spray painted it gold, but didn't end up loving it. I painted it over in white. To add a little interest to the white, I came up with the idea to add beads to the cord. I'm really glad that I backed out of my initial gold colour since I probably wouldn't have come up with this beaded version.
The light fixture was really simple to make. Here's what I did:
1) paint your fixture to your desired colour. (I believe Target has this light in white already, but mine was teal). I disassembled the light and taped the cord with painter's tape.
2) Paint your wooden beads. I left two of my beads natural and the other two were painted grey and black.
3) If your fixture is a hard wire fixture, string the beads directly onto the cord and install the fixture.
*The Target light is a plug in fixture. If you choose to use this light, you will have to complete the following changes in order to add the beads to the fixture:
A) Cut the plug off the end of the cord so that you can string the beads on the cord.
B) Follow the instructions for installing a new plug to the end of your light in this post (the photos below are from our bedroom cage lights which are wired essentially the same).
*all electrical work should be completed by a professional and inspected by an electrician.
If you would like to hang this light from the ceiling as I did you will need to install a receptacle in the ceiling and/or have your fixture rewired to include a ground wire in order to be hard wired to an electrical box. Again, these are tasks that should be completed by a licensed electrician.
I think this new light made all the difference in giving this space a much more modern feel. Now I'm trying to figure out what else I can add some wooden beads too. :)
If you missed the mudroom update you can find it here.

Love it Anu :) I have a soft spot for clean and modern spaces like yours. It is secretly how I wish I was able to live, but it isn't in my DNA make-up...I like too many styles. xo K
ReplyDeletevery nice! I loved the old light, too, but this one fits in so well in the new space :)
ReplyDeleteThis is lovely! The over-sized wooden beads are such a gorgeous touch! I can't help but be reminded of the Eames hang-it-all coat-rack - clean, modern, whimsical design!
ReplyDeleteThanks Brynne. I love the hang-it-all. It's a piece that I've always thought of getting, but haven't figured out the right spot for it yet. :)
DeleteThis looks so awesome. I love it in white. I think that was the right choice :) Love the beads you added. Super project!!

ReplyDeleteI know I say this all the time but this is so you and perfect for the space. Love how you stay true to you style!
ReplyDeleteoh wow! i'll have to check our target!! - i've liked these lights since last year, but was searching for two white ones - could only find one in all of toronto - ha! and it was in dingy condition anyway- then figured that it wouldn't be worth the price of buying two regular priced teal ones only to spray paint... but... now at $5?!! i think i'll have to go to a smaller town to find them... ;)
ReplyDeleteI got the light awhile ago. I haven't checked recently to see if they still have them. I'll keep my eye out for them for you the next time I'm at a Target. :)
DeleteThis is so awesome! Pinned :) I'd love it if you shared this over at The Makers link party going on right now, http://upcycledtreasures.com
