Is an Ikea Kitchen Worth the Wait?

We're very much in the planning stage of our kitchen/house reno and I've been considering all the options including Ikea cabinets for our kitchen.  There are a lot of Ikea kitchens that have been customized and look pretty great and everyone knows that you can't beat the price.  There are even design services that will design a kitchen for you with Ikea cabinets.
The above kitchens are all via Croma Express (an Ikea Kitchen design service in Toronto)

This kitchen below is another Ikea kitchen and suits this minimal interior quite well.

However, it's not these Ikea kitchens that have me considering delaying our kitchen reno.  It's the new Metod kitchens that Ikea has already introduced in Europe.  I have heard rumours that these new cabinets will be coming to North America soon.  There seems to be way more cabinet options and sizes in this new line which would make it even easier to customize.  I also like the options they have for built-in appliances (integrated fridges).  I'm not sure if the appliances will come here since the American standard sizes are different from Europe.  Again, it would be interesting to see if they will introduce some new door styles.  I really like the Nodsta door style in the Ikea Metod line as it would go well in a minimal Scandinavian kitchen.  The lowers also have just a single drawer at the top (versus divided top drawers that are in the current Akurum line).  This allows for a nice clean horizontal line.  Here are a couple kitchens with the Nodsta door fronts:

I had all, but dismissed the Ikea kitchen for our reno until I heard of the new Metod line.  I'm really tempted to wait a little longer for our renovation to see what these new Ikea kitchens will be.

Here's another lovely kitchen from Finland that looks to be Ikea:

All in all, you really can get a lovely kitchen in any style from Ikea.  Now that a new more customizable Ikea kitchen is on the horizon?  Is it worth the wait for Metod and how long will it be?

  1. if it is really what you want and you will be in your house forever or at least a really long time, then yes. worth it so you have what you want and not just a "for now" you later regret.

    1. I guess it's hard to know if it's what I want until I can see it in person. I do like the look of the new line though.

Just to let you know not all European Ikea items make their way to North America :(

    1. Yes, it will be seen what they bring to North America. I'm glad to hear that you like your kitchen.

  4. I think it's worth the wait. We LOVE LOVE LOVE our IKEA cabinets. We have decided that in future homes and kitchen renos we will always go with IKEA cabinets. That method line looks really sweet. I'd stick it out :)

    1. I would agree, but it's hard to know what they will bring to North America. I guess time will tell. :)

  6. Oh that would make me very tempted to wait. I think you can already get the built in fridges and IKEA sells the right size fridge to go with that. I am excited about the more cabinet sizes. I hope there will be a 12 inch drawer section. I seem to miss that every time I design a space :)

    1. The ones here are just the counter depth ones. I'm hoping we'll get the panel ready ones here. It will be interesting to see what the new options will be.

  7. I have had my Ikea kitchen for 6 years now and the cupboard fronts look as good now as the day it was installed (Abstrakt high gloss). My mom's friend moved house frequently when I was younger and always used Ikea kitchens that held up really well.

My parents on the other hand put in an expensive custom cabinet kitchen that looked worn and ramshackle in less than two years. Same thing happened to her friend with a different custom kitchen.

So all that said, I am a big fan of Ikea kitchens and would definitely look to them first if I were to do another kitchen renovation in the future. It's worth the wait!

  8. Ikea is worth the wait! I have had my Ikea Abstrakt kitchen for 6 years now and it looks as good as the day it was installed (minus some water damage under the sink due to a leak). I would install an Ikea kitchen again in the future without question.

    1. Thanks for your feedback Jenn. I've also seen some custom kitchen companies that have cabinets that don't look as good as Ikea. It really takes a lot of research to find a good cabinet company. Glad to hear that you like yours so much to install it again. :)

  11. here is a post by a professional designer where she's taking about why she loves Ikea kitchens: http://carolreeddesign.blogspot.ca/2009/10/why-i-love-ikea-kitchens.html

I had one before and absolutely loved it (if we ever do our dream/custom home, we would go for an Ikea kitchen in a heartbeat). As for waiting for it, what inconveniences would you have to put up with during your wait? If they are minor, I would wait. If they are major, I would consider the current Ikea line. But I would go Ikea no matter what! :)

    1. Thanks for the link. I think the good thing is that we're still in the planning stage and may be able to wait.

  12. Ooh, so tricky! I think I'd be inclined to wait at least for a while. Love all those inspiration photos!

  14. I did some snooping for you. It is going to roll out in February of next year under the name Sektion. There will be new fronts. More colors. So exciting!!!

  16. Hi! I live in Sweden and we have the new Metod serie here. And I have it in our new kitchen! With Nodsta fronts! And I love it. But there are some things you might want to know before buying it...
    1. The socle covers are plastic and not that good. I liked the old version better.
    2. The descriptions for the drawer fronts does not match Nodsta fronts and we had to use other holes than the once in the description.
    3. The lower cabinets are deeper than the old series (63 cm instead of 60cm) which makes it difficult here at least to buy standard wooden countertops from other companies.
Anyhow. Looking forward to see what you decide! Love your blog!

    1. These are all great things to know. I can see why you wouldn't like the plastic covers as much. I wonder if they were preparing for the big North American appliance with the deeper cabinets. We're always building the lowers out so that the ranges don't stick out past the counters as much. Thanks so much Pia for your feedback. This information is really good to know!

  17. Ooo, tough decision.

We love our IKEA kitchen. I actually think they hold up better than our kitchen in the last house which was ordered from a local kitchen specialty store.

  18. Do you know who makes the hardware and faucet on the first and second pics? The brushed gold hardware and faucet? Love you blog

    1. Hi! I think the hardware is similar to the Lewis Dolin brushed brass hardware. This is one site that sells it: http://www.myknobs.com/lew31101.html. I'm not sure about the faucet though. The kitchen is by Croma here in Toronto so you may be able to contact them. The Kohler Purist is a little similar in style and Delta also has some gold kitchen faucets. I hope that helps!

  19. I really hope they offer the integrated fridge in the U.S. with the new line. We plan to do our kitchen in spring...still planning. I hadn't given integrated fridge much though until we visited my 2 cousins in Germany this past summer. Both had tall integrated fridges in their kitchens and now even the idea of counter depth just doesn't appeal to me so much anymore.

  20. Unfortunately, I really liked the Nodstra cabinets as well but they will not offer them in North America. Too bad I had my heart set on them. They also will not offer the black inside of the cabinets like Europe. In the USA/CA they are brown- BOOOOOOOO !!
