DIY: Paper Ball Ornaments

We finally got our Christmas tree at the end of last week!  Little Pilot was so excited to go and cut down the tree.  I'm hoping to share our decorated tree later this week, but first I'm letting you see another ornament that I made (you can see my paper straw himmeli ornaments here).  They are paper ball ornaments.  I shared these at By Stephanie Lynn's handmade ornament series.  The colours are keeping with the rest of my Christmas decor this year: grey, white, black, gold and natural greenery.  I love how simple they are.

These ornaments were inspired by these from Ferm Living.  They are made from strips of scrapbook paper that are formed into spheres.  I also love that these could be adapted to any style of Christmas decor depending on the paper you choose.  By adding some painted beads I was able to tie in some of the other colours in our Christmas decor as well.

Here's how I made my ornaments:

Paper Ball Ornaments

1.  Materials (for one ornament):  six  (3/4" x 10-1/2") strips of paper or card stock, approximately 6" of wire  (will be trimmed), two wood beads and twine/ribbon.

2.  Start by twisting one end of the wire to make a loop and then thread one of the beads on.

3.  Make small holes at either end and middle of each strip of paper (I used a piece of wire to poke my holes).  Thread all the strips of paper through the middle hole onto the wire leaving the bead underneath.  Make sure to fan your strips evenly  (this will help you in the next steps).  I put a dab of hot glue at the top of my stack of paper strips to keep them down.

4.  Take the ends of the strip of paper that is at the bottom (i.e., closest to the bead) and thread both through the wire using the holes you made in step 3.  Use glue to secure your ring together.

5. - 7.  Repeat step 4. with each subsequent strip of paper working from the strips on the bottom in.  The idea is to bring the strips of paper that our on the outer at the bottom of the sphere to the inner.

8.  Once you have made your last ring, thread on the last bead and twist another loop on the end and trim off any excess wire.  Use twine or ribbon to hang your ornament.

I'm so happy with how these ornaments turned out and I can't wait to show them to you on our tree.

I'm also participating in a Jingle Mingle this week with some fabulous bloggers.  So stay tuned!

    1. Thanks Gretchen. I'm hoping I can post about our tree before the kiddos totally destroy the decorations. The bottom half of the tree is pretty bare right now. ;)

    1. I thought the beads would help tie these ornaments with the Himmeli ones I made before. It was a fun way to add another colour to them as well.

  11. Super cute. Another thing on my list of things to do...... one of these christmases. But definitely a MUST DO craft! :D I'm so desperately behind with everything I'm beginning to doubt we'll have the kind of Christmas I'd like.

    1. Oh, I'm super behind too. I tried baking cookies on the weekend, but most of them are gone already. I think I still have lots of baking to do and wrapping and cleaning and…. I'm sure it will come together somehow though. :)

  12. These are awesome. Totally and officially on my list. I have a huge bin of scrapbook paper so it'd be a free project. (Love free projects.)
