DIY: Acorn Toadstool Necklace

Today's DIY is a little Toadstool necklace made from an acorn.  I have memories of picking mushrooms in Finland with my mom.  I think that's why I have always had a fondness for them.  Of course, the red and white toadstools are poisonous and not the kind we could pick, but they were fun to look at. :)  Little Pilot and I made the necklaces for a couple of his girl friends and he was really excited about them.  I think these would be a lovely DIY gift for Christmas too if you're like me and have some acorns leftover from fall crafting.

Co-pilot modelled the necklace for me.  It lasted for about 5 seconds before he was trying to take it off or take a bite out of the acorn/mushroom.  This necklace is probably better suited for an older child. :)
*this necklace is not appropriate for babies/small children as the small parts and string may pose a choking/strangulation hazard.  These photos were staged & supervised with my child as an older child was not available.  Please use sound judgement when giving a necklace or small toys to children.*

Since my boys don't wear necklaces themselves we painted a few to use as decorations for their room.  Little Pilot has a small hedgehog figurine on the shelf above his bed. He wanted to put a mushroom beside the hedgehog for him to eat.

I got the idea for my necklace from these toadstools.  They were super easy to make too.  Little Pilot helped my paint the tops.  He also helped me put on the spots with a fine brush once the red paint dried.  I then hot glued the painted tops to the bottom of the acorn.  A whole was drilled through the tip of the acorn top and hemp twine inserted for the necklace chain.  I think these toadstools would make a super cute garland too.

I loved making this little craft with Little Pilot and I think we may make a few more to give as Christmas gifts to his friends.
