Kaija Mummu used to sew lamp shades for a living and this is the table she used. She loved to tell stories about her job and the people she worked with and what Toronto was like back in the day. This sewing table has a lot of sentiment behind it as well as being pretty darn awesome! I'm glad I've found the perfect spot for it in our living room. The table is in pretty good shape, but it could probably use some oiling/refinishing.
This is the brand name on the inside: "Horn Moebel". I googled it, but didn't find that much information on the company.
The cabinet also has this great lock and key. It locks the door to the sewing machine part as well as all the drawers which is perfect for keeping my little guys out of there.
So this is what it looks like once you open it up and lift the sewing machine up. I put my own sewing machine on the lift and yes, my sewing machine discoloured on the one plastic panel!?
The door to the cabinet accordian folds and the top of the cabinet flips open and is supported by the door. The other half of the top lifts up and slides behind the cabinet. There's a little damage from an iron on the inside.
Oh, and just because I like pictures that show "real life" as well. :)
Happy Thursday!

ReplyDeleteAgreed! The perfect spot. I love furniture with history and meaning....plus it's beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThat is THE BEST sewing table I have ever seen. So functional, yet you would never know when it is all folded up. This looks fabulous!
ReplyDeleteSuch a nice little piece, and I love that it's meaningful to your family, too :)
ReplyDeleteSuch a beautiful piece!!
ReplyDeleteI thought, horn moebel ought to be German, as "Möbel" is the German word for furniture. So I asked German google and found this: http://www.horn-collection.de/ They still have the very same logo and they still produce functional furniture. The fourth point "Nähmaschinenmöbel" is about sewing desks – although they arent's any proper informations really… But if you would like to have anything translated, I can do that!
ReplyDeleteHave a nice day!
Love, Midsommarflicka

ReplyDeleteAmazing!
ReplyDeleteWhat a beautiful table! My mom has a great sewing table that she inherited from her mother that has a similar look that I just love.
ReplyDeleteHow wonderful! I love mid century furniture and my sewing machine currently lives on my dining room table.
ReplyDeleteYou know, you should be able to fix that iron mark if you want to. The veneer on these older pieces is typically very thick. Just sand it down a bit and get some Danish Oil. The instructions on the can work great. But I also like pieces that have a bit of character!
Thanks for the tip. :) I've got some teak oil already, but have been hesitant to use it since it's so smelly and I'm still nursing. Maybe I can get the husband to do it for me. :)
