KAIJA MUMMU'S MID CENTURY MODERN SEWING TABLE

Kaija Mummu was the closest I had to a grandmother here in Canada.  She was technically my grandmother's cousin, but I knew her much better than my own grandmother and she was the one that came to all my birthdays, graduations, etc.  When she passed a few years ago our family inherited a few things from her.  One of them was this fabulous mid century modern sewing table:

Kaija Mummu used to sew lamp shades for a living and this is the table she used.  She loved to tell stories about her job and the people she worked with and what Toronto was like back in the day.  This sewing table has a lot of sentiment behind it as well as being pretty darn awesome!  I'm glad I've found the perfect spot for it in our living room.  The table is in pretty good shape, but it could probably use some oiling/refinishing.

This is the brand name on the inside: "Horn Moebel".  I googled it, but didn't find that much information on the company.

The cabinet also has this great lock and key.  It locks the door to the sewing machine part as well as all the drawers which is perfect for keeping my little guys out of there.

So this is what it looks like once you open it up and lift the sewing machine up.  I put my own sewing machine on the lift and yes, my sewing machine discoloured on the one plastic panel!?

The door to the cabinet accordian folds and the top of the cabinet flips open and is supported by the door.  The other half of the top lifts up and slides behind the cabinet.  There's a little damage from an iron on the inside.

The actual lifting mechanism is pretty neat in that you pull that black button and it lifts up as if it was hydraulic.  The bottom of the cabinet also folds up to make space for your legs.  I love the little organizing caddy that sits above the top drawer.  It still has Kaija Mummu's things in it.  I have to find some time to add my own sewing stuff in there.  The caddy can be lifted out and you can access the top drawer from above as well.  They really thought of everything when they made this!

So that's my new favourite piece of furniture and I think I have found the perfect spot for it for now.  It may eventually move to the basement once the reno is done.  This is also my attempt at keeping you up-to-date with the ever changing decor/furniture rearranging that happens around here. :)  Here's this corner of our living room right now.  Our mantel really needs some help.  Just another item on the never ending list!

Oh, and just because I like pictures that show "real life" as well. :)

Happy Thursday!

  5. I thought, horn moebel ought to be German, as "Möbel" is the German word for furniture. So I asked German google and found this: http://www.horn-collection.de/ They still have the very same logo and they still produce functional furniture. The fourth point "Nähmaschinenmöbel" is about sewing desks – although they arent's any proper informations really… But if you would like to have anything translated, I can do that!

    Have a nice day!
    Love, Midsommarflicka

  11. How wonderful! I love mid century furniture and my sewing machine currently lives on my dining room table.

You know, you should be able to fix that iron mark if you want to. The veneer on these older pieces is typically very thick. Just sand it down a bit and get some Danish Oil. The instructions on the can work great. But I also like pieces that have a bit of character!

    1. Thanks for the tip. :) I've got some teak oil already, but have been hesitant to use it since it's so smelly and I'm still nursing. Maybe I can get the husband to do it for me. :)
