THE BASEMENT RENO BEGINS...AGAIN

Does anyone remember my patio/deck reveal from a couple of months ago?  It was looking something like this:

And now it looks like this:

Not the kind of before and after you were expecting?  It's awful, but the deck had to go.  The excavator is coming this week to dig up our foundation so the basement can be waterproofed and then we can finally continue with the reno.  I'm going to try something a little different and let you see all the good, bad and the ugly that comes with renovating an old house.  So this was the first ugly step.

The only work we had to do ourselves though was to move the furniture/clear the deck.  Tech Guy put up an ad for a free deck and people were lining up to dismantle it and carry it away!  Go figure!  Someone, or rather several someones, actually wanted our old deck.  A couple of guys picked up the boards and the benches and another came for the frame.  We have a little bit of wood leftover that we'll have to dispose of, but they piled it nicely for us on the driveway too. :)

Here's a pic of Nalle enjoying the deck one more time.  You can see how big it really was.

And the deck on it's way out:

Our patio furniture is set up randomly in the yard, but I think it might be fun to try dining out under the trees. :)

The sectional is sitting next to a frame that Tech Guy built last year for a shed that we haven't been able to finish.  I'm not sure he'll get to it this year either.  So sorry neighbours for the eyesore!

With the deck out of commission and the backyard being a work zone, the boys had fun playing on the front steps. :)

Now that you've had a little glimpse of the chaos around here, I'm hoping to continue to keep y'all up to date on this reno.  I can't promise how quickly things will go since Tech Guy's business is very busy right now, but I promise to try to post about it as things happen.

p.s. My computer is sick.  It's a real pain and I apologize in advance if I'm not posting as much or if I can't get back to your comments as quickly as usual.  I'm hoping they'll be able to fix my computer sooner rather than later!

  2. YIKES! I didn't realise that the basement reno would have to start from outside and thus meaning taking out the patio. I hope smooth sailing for the project. Looking forward to hearing how things go forward. Hugs!

    1. I'm happy that there's still some space for the boys and Nalle. It would be even worse if the whole yard was a pile of dirt!

Also, where did you find the great outdoor sectional?

    2. Oh, and the sectional is from Home Outfitters (a Canadian Store). The full details are in this post: http://www.nalleshouse.com/2013/06/summer-patio-seating-area.html

  5. GASP! That was not what I was expecting! I guess it's all worth it to have a dry basement, but it's sad to see that deck go!

    1. We're planning on doing a lot or mechanical updates and a nice Sauna/bathroom so we really don't want to risk any more water problems.

  6. I just got our bathroom nicely painted and re-floored, and then a sewer pipe broke and everything had to be ripped apart.. Now I'm doing Everything All Over Again, so I can totally relate with your deck project :)

Im sure it will be the prettiest deck Ever when it's finished! :)

    1. Oh no! We had that happen last year and it's no fun. It's the reason we had to gut our basement and start this reno until we had more water this spring. We're trying to make sure the house is totally waterproofed now. Hang in there with your reno redo!
