HAND-KNIT BUNTING

Mummu did it again!  She knit the boys' this cute bunting for their room:

I had asked her to help me figure out a knit bunting and she ended up completing the whole project!  This was a good thing since I have been so distracted with basement reno planning that it would have taken me forever to get around to making it.  Thanks Mummu!

I tried to get Little Pilot to model the bunting for me and he was all over the place.  I managed to get some fun action pictures. :)

I've hung the bunting above Co-pilot's bed for now.  I still haven't decided whether I will leave it like this or add some kind of artwork above the crib.  The colours in the bunting are similar to those found in their curtains and it's the same yarn that was used for Co-pilot's sleep sack.  We added a new colour, persimmon, which is my attempt to add an orangish colour to the room (Little Pilot's favourite colour right now).  I'm still thinking of ways to add persimmon to the rest of the room as well.  Would adding this rug be too many stripes in this room?  Maybe...probably...  Fabric is always an option for adding colour too.

Overall, I LOVE the handmade quality to this bunting and that it has a nice weight and drape.  I even like that some of the flags hang haphazardly at each end.  I'm also working on a different bunting to place over Little Pilot's bed so that he doesn't feel left out. :)

Hand-Knit Bunting How-To

This is a pretty quick and easy knitting project since it just uses a garter stitch.  If you'd like to make your own, here's what you will need:
  • dk weight yarn (I used Debbie Bliss Baby Cashmerino) in several colours
  • size 4 needles
  • crochet hook

How to make the bunting:

1.  Make your flags using the pattern below
2.  Crochet a string of your desired length using a chain stitch with two strands crocheted together.
3.  Sew your knit flags on the wrong side to your crocheted string using yarn that matches your flag so that you won't see your stitching on the right side.
* If you don't want to crochet, you could try braiding or twisting strands of yarn together to make your string

Flag pattern:
- CO 1 stitch
- 1st row: knit 1 add 1 stitch
- 2nd row: knit 2 add 1 stitch
- 3rd and 4th row: knit 3
- 5th row knit 1, M1, knit 1, M1, knit 1 (5 stitches)
- 6th, 7th, 8th rows: knit 5
- 9th row: knit 2, M1, knit 1, M1, knit 2 (7 stitches)
- 10th-13th row: knit 7
- repeat rows 9-13, ten times until you have 27 stitches
- knit 3 more rows
- cast off

Another great knitting project via Mummu.  The boys and I are so blessed to have such a talented Mummu!

  2. Oh, that's adorable! I don't have a mother who knits, so if she feels like making another one for Abe's nursery, I wouldn't mind. The colors are perfect ;). Just kidding! I'll just have to talk my mom into learning to knit somehow.....

  8. So cute. I love this project and wish I could knit!!

It's so weird to hear of someone else's Mummu. I read that and thought, how do you know my Mummu? I forget that's not her name, because I'm so unaccustomed to anyone buy family using that word in North America.
