MORE DIY FABRIC BASKETS

I made some more baskets!  I seem to have a thing for fabric baskets (you can see my other baskets here).  These ones are for Little Pilot's toys and yes, they're pink.  It's the fabric that I had on hand when I decided to make the baskets. :)  Little Pilot doesn't seem to mind and if he does in the future, I can always use them to hold some of my sewing/knitting supplies.

One of the great things about making your own baskets is that you can make them exactly the size you want (you can see how I customized the size in my tutorial below).  I made mine to fit our living room cupboard perfectly.

I also love how great they are for Little Pilot to carry since they are not too stiff/heavy.  He can easily take them off the shelf and carry his planes or cars over to the coffee table/couch and play with them.

They work well for clean up too (especially when you don't want your baby brother playing with your planes). :)

You can find the tutorial for the baskets after the jump...

DIY Fabric Baskets:

My baskets are 11" wide x 8.5" deep x 6.5" tall

For each basket cut:

From your outer fabric, lining fabric and fusible batting cut a piece measuring 22"{this is equal to:  the depth of the basket (8.5") + 2 x the height of the basket (2 x 6.5"= 13") + seam allowance (0.5")} x 20"{this is equal to the depth of the basket (8.5") + the width of the basket (11") + seam allowance (0.5")}.
From your outer and lining fabric two 2" x 8" pieces.

To sew your basket:
The handles:
1.  Sew a handle outer and lining fabric piece with right sides together along one edge.  Iron a small 1/4" hem on the edges that are not sewn (these edges will be top-stitched together)
2.  Fold the pieces together wrong sides facing and pin to make the handle
3.  Top stitch both sides of your handle (1/8 - 1/4" from the edge)
4. One handle is complete.  Repeat steps 1-3 for the other handle

The basket:
5.  Iron the fusible batting onto your outer fabric.
6.  Fold your piece in half length wise (i.e., the 22" side of your piece) right sides together and sew together along each side.  This will make a little pouch.
7.  Make boxed corners:  For each side:  Open up your pouch and fold the seam edge down to make a triangle.  You can make sure your triangle (and your corner) is symmetrical by lining up triangle with the angled lines found on a cutting mat.  Draw a line across at the point where the base of the triangle is equal to the depth of your basket (8.5" for my basket).  Pin in place and stitch along the line to make the corner.  You can trim the excess fabric after you have sewn the corner.
* repeat steps 6 & 7 with the lining
8.  Baste your handles onto either end of the basket (the seamed ends) with the outer fabric right sides together.  You will want to baste quite close to the edge so that the stitching will be concealed when you attach the lining.

9.  Place your lining inside the outer basket right sides together and pin in place
10.  Stitch around the top edge leaving a small opening through which you will turn the basket right side out.
11.  Turn the basket right side out and top stitch along the top edge enclosing the opening as you go.

That's it!  Now that you're all done you have a custom-sized basket for your stuff.
