DRESSER REDO & HOMERIGHT PAINT SPRAYER REVIEW

When HomeRight contacted me and asked if I was interested in trying one of their products, I jumped at the chance to try an airless paint sprayer.  Tech Guy and I have been talking about getting a paint sprayer for some time now since we wanted one for when we finish our basement.  It looks like the basement reno will be back in swing at the end of August, maybe, hopefully!  In the meantime, I had a dresser that I picked up from the side of the road that I wanted to refinish for the boys' shared room (you've already seen the inside of the drawers in this post last week). It was in rough shape, but the scale and clean modern lines suited our style to a "t".  You also couldn't beat the price tag!

The paint sprayer that I used for this project was the HomeRight Finish Max Fine Finish HVLP Sprayer.  It is an airless sprayer which meant that we didn't have to pull out the noisy compressor to use it.  You just plug it into your extension cord and it's ready to go.  We chose to spray both the primer and the top coats.  The sprayer came with a funnel cup that you dipped in your paint to measure the flow of your thinned paint(timing how quickly the cup emptied).  The only thing we found was that we didn't actually end up thinning the paint as much as the little cup "told" us to since our paint was not supposed to be thinned that much (according to the "paint guy").  We didn't have any problems with spraying it even though it was a little thicker.

Before we actually started spraying the dresser, we practiced on a scrap piece of veneer.  There were adjustments for the velocity of the spray and the direction of the spray.  I recommend trying the sprayer in all the different positions to get an idea of how it works.  The spraying was actually pretty easy and quick once I practiced a little and got the hang of it.  What worked for me was to keep my wrist still and to make sure the brass pin was clean to prevent dried paint from spraying onto the dresser (see pic below).  I also made sure that I cleaned the sprayer between coats.  The cleaning was actually the hardest part.  The spray nozzle bits and the paint holder came off for cleaning, but you still needed to clean the inside behind the nozzle which was trickier.  However, from what I've read about spraying paint, cleaning the sprayer is always the worst part.

Overall, the sprayer was really simple to use (for this first timer) and I was really happy with how the dresser turned out.  I tried to take some pictures to show you the finish.  It's really smooth and even.  At the end of this project I was already thinking of what I could spray next. :)

As for the dresser, I left the base untouched in the original wood finish and painted the drawers, tops and sides in Sherwin Williams Pure White.  The dresser is much lower than the change table that was in the boys' room before, but it has the same modern feel to it.  I actually took the change table top off of the old dresser and placed it on this one and I love that there is a little extra room to put a lamp there and maybe add some accessories.  I also changed up the shade on the lamp to something a little lighter and put the round mirror back up.

Here's the dresser before and after:

So this side of the room got a new old dresser with some colourful fabric lined drawers.  It still needs a little more decorating I think.  Maybe some art and different accessories?  Oh, and are you wondering where Co-pilot's crib is?  There has been some re-arranging and new furniture that I hope to share soon.  Stay tuned!

*I was given the HomeRight Finish Max Fine Finish HVLP Sprayer in exchange for completing this review.  All opinions of the product are 100% mine.  I try to review products that I love and hope that you will too. :)

  2. I can't even tell you how long I've been looking for a dresser for my kids room that looks like that. I keep finding all the great 80's ones but nothing with clean lines. You guys did a great job and thanks for the sprayer review. I told my husband that that only way I am ever going to paint our kitchen cabinets is if I use a sprayer.

    1. You've just got to stalk the neighbour's trash. :) It was a pretty lucky find and I've been hoarding the dresser for over a year now. We painted kitchen cupboards in our first house by hand. I think a sprayer would save you tons of time and probably give you a more even finish.

    1. Thanks so much! The length is one of the things that I really liked about the dresser. I knew the proportions were right for a variety of uses (under the tv, console, dresser, etc.).

  9. we just barely tried using a paint sprayer for the first time this past week and there definitely is a bit of a learning curve! we used one with a compressor though so maybe that's the difference. I loved it. it took our project from 10+ hours of painting to less than 1!!! the dresser is so gorgeous. i love that you left the legs:)

    1. We have a paint sprayer that came with one of our compressors. I haven't dared to try it yet. Maybe I should do a comparison. :)
