SUMMER PATIO - SEATING AREA

As promised, I'm back with the second half of our patio/deck.  Yesterday, when I showed you the dining area I left you off with this sneak peek of the seating area:

We purchased the outdoor sectional already last year, but didn't get around to finding an umbrella and the other finishing touches such as the pillows until this year.  I think being preggers, working and running after a toddler took up most of my energy last summer.  The sectional worked fine last year, but the shade from the umbrella really helps from the morning to mid afternoon when the deck gets a lot of sun.

Opposite the sectional is the Ikea lounge chair.  I loved this chair so much that we also got the armchairs for the dining area.  The chair got a lovely planter as a side table. You can actually use the bench on the deck for a place to put things down if you don't want to get your glass all covered in
dirt. :)

Here's another view of the sectional and all the pillows.  The small black and white pillows were part of a set that had two bench cushions and a square tablecloth.  The set was a nice yard sale find from a couple of years ago.  I used the tablecloth to make two larger pillow covers (one on the sectional and one in the dining area).

One end of the sectional has another planter side table.  The stacking planters I picked up from Costco and I planted Dahlias in them.  Can you spot Nalle in the photo below?

Here's the other end of the sectional.  The square ottoman floats around and is often used as a coffee table.  I leave the cushion off of it since Little Pilot is always climbing on it with his muddy shoes.  This side also gets an official side table.  Yippee!  Whoever sits here actually gets a place to put their Birch Beer.  The side table was another yard sale find at, wait for it.... $1.00!  I don't think it's meant for outdoors, but at a dollar, I don't mind using it outside.

Little Pilot woke up from his nap while I was taking the photos and quite enjoyed my set up on the side table. :)  He's recently gotten into "reading" text.  He runs his finger across the words to pretend he's reading.  Pretty good print awareness for a two year-old. No?  It's also a good thing he doesn't know how to open bottles or he would have downed that birch beer in a second!

I thought I'd add this photo to show you how long our deck is.  It's really hard to tell in photos, but it's about 40 feet.  You can also see where the garden that we are working on is (on the left)  as well as all the exterior stuff we haven't tackled yet:
  • paint back door and trim
  • paint garage door
  • paint or remove shutters (any opinions?)
  • something to dress up the plain brick walls (trying to figure out some kind of art that would work outside)
  • Is there a way to camouflage those mechanical pipes?
  • etc. etc...

The sectional in action with all my human boys... Nalle must be there somewhere or maybe he was off chasing another squirrel. :)

Oh, and on another note.  Co-pilot is 8 months now.  I still need to get to editing his photos to share here, but here's one that I quickly chose to share.

Life is really full right now in the best of ways.  I hope you're enjoying your late spring - almost summer and finding God's blessings in all the small and big moments.  I really appreciate you taking the time to visit my blog today.

  1. It looks great! I love your sectional and the IKEA chairs are fabulous! I vote for painting the shutters, and as far as hiding the pipes is concerned, what about building a long bench/ledge across the entire back wall right above the pipes? You could add an edge to it that would cover them but still give you access to them. It wouldn't have to be very deep...maybe 12"? You could use it for holding planters or as a makeshift bar.
Cant wait to see what you come up with! Enjoy that fabulous patio!

    1. Thanks Sarah. Love the bench/ledge idea. I'll have to check if it will work there. I wanted to keep the shutters too, but Tech Guy wants to get rid of them. We'll see who wins the shutter battle. :) Thanks so much for your ideas!

  3. Lovely! Your sectional looks really similar to my new chairs....so I'm pleased to see that it's holding up well to boys in its second year :). Co-pilot's so big! Walking/standing pictures are not many months off!

    1. I really haven't noticed much wear on the sectional despite being outside through the winter (we stored the cushions in the garage). I think the resin wicker holds up pretty well. I'm still waiting on some official crawling. He's pivoting and dragging himself a little, but no bottom up crawling yet.

    2. My oldest didn't crawl until 9 1/2 months. He didn't even drag himself around or anything--just sat there like a lump. We said he had an "if I can't reach it, I don't need it!" approach to babyhood. But he walked at one year exactly, despite the late crawling.

  7. What a fabulous outdoor space to spend time with your family... I love how cozy it feels having the deck quite low to the ground. Your sectional is amazing, would love to have one of those one day!! Great job decorating the whole thing Anu:)

  10. I just love this whole thing! Such great style and comfort. I would sit out here all day long. It is so beautifully designed and that bench around the whole thing is just genius. You could throw a huge garden party out here with that!

    1. Thanks Katja. The deck was there with the bench when we bought the house so I can't take any credit for it, but it gives lots of extra seating when there's a party. Little Pilot likes to climb onto the bench which makes me a little nervous though! :)

  13. Hi Anu,

I always get a little emotional when I visit bloggers from Canada as I so miss my country of birth and the fresh, dewy spring mornings in Toronto! Your patio is young and hip and fun! Love all the blue hues (and that gorgeous door!) and floral touches. Thanks for sharing all that great Canadian craftiness!

  19. Your children are DARLING! and your deck is beautiful! you did an amazing job (with the kids and deck ;) ). Question: off topic a bit but, do you like the brick painted? I'm contemplating it myself, and also, is the deck painted?

Anyways, I love how the furniture pieces you chose work with each other so well. They're obviously not a "set" but are so complimentary. Great job!

    1. Thanks so much. The brick is actually that colour - it hasn't been painted. I guess it's pretty unusual to have such a monochromatic brick. :) The deck was sanded and then stained with an opaque stain from C2 called "woodpecker". I hope that helps!

  22. Do you have an posts about building your deck? I'm interested in steel cable and wondering where to find out price for that for our deck next spring. thanks.

    1. Hi Nicki, I haven't written any posts on the new deck, but likely will next spring when I can take photos of it again. I've had a lot of questions about the railings especially. We made them ourselves. My husband ordered the cable and fittings from ebay. He thinks the cable was 5/8" thick and the hardware consisted of a threaded terminal that you crimp onto the wire with some acorn nuts. I hope that helps!

    2. Thank you! That helps. I'll be looking for your post next spring, too, though since we are clueless in this whole area! We did make a 'sideboard', storage cabinet in our living room from your idea on applad cabinet from IKEA. I see you changed the wood top to marble. We haven't decided yet what to do for the top. But we love it 'as is' already
