INVISIBLE SPEAKERS

Today's post is going to be a little techy, but there are some cute construction baby pictures as well!  When I started my dining room posts my husband really wanted me to write about our invisible speakers.  I said I would do it as long as he finished painting the wall where he installed the speakers last summer.  Yup, it takes Tech Guy some time to complete his projects.  He's really good at getting them to 90% complete and then the last 10% seems to take forever.  He often needs a little motivation. :)  Anyone else have this problem or is it just me?

I'm not all that into tech stuff as all the equipment generally is not very attractive and can really stick out in a finished space.  So when Tech Guy told me he would be putting in some speakers, but that I wouldn't see them I was a little more accommodating than usual.  Can you spot the invisible speakers in our dining room?

I'm guessing you didn't find them.  Here is the same photo, but this time I put rectangles on the photo to let you see where the invisible speakers are.  They are completely in the wall, dry-walled over and then painted our wall colour.

This is what the Nakymatone invisible speaker looks like before it goes in your wall.  The black part is what is flush with your drywall and the rest goes in your wall space between the studs.  These invisible speakers were actually designed and built here in Canada by our very good friend.  It's pretty great to know some super talented and smart people! :)

There's a video below that shows how to install the invisible speakers.  So I'll just generally describe how Little Pilot and Tech Guy installed one of our speakers.  The speaker came with a template that was used to cut the opening and mark the positions for the screws.  You'll have to figure out where your studs are so that you can cut your hole in between them.  We ran our wire for the speakers through the wall (our audio equipment is in the basement).  The speaker also came with some spacers that brought it flush with our wall and a removable handle to hold it in place while it was screwed.  Little Pilot loved helping his daddy screw in the screws.  He's so little in these pics as it was last summer!

Once the speaker is screwed in place, you will want to tape the edges and mud over it.  Little Pilot has gotten an early start on learning to use a spackle.  He's also sporting a bit of a "plumber's diaper". :)

Once the drywall compound was dry it was sanded.  We had to spackle a couple times to get everything really smooth.  Once the wall was to our liking, it was painted.  Overall, not overly complicated to install (even 1 1/2 year-old Little Pilot could do it). :)

Since the speaker designer is our friend, the other speaker was installed by the Nakymatone company.  They actually made an installation video in our dining room.  So if you are interested in the details on how to install these invisible speakers feel free to watch the video below. :)

We don't have any audio equipment on the main floor.  It is all concealed in the basement.  This is a real bonus in our small home because I need all the storage space (like our sideboard) for the things we use every day.  To play our music we use Apple airplay on our iPhones or iPad.

We love the speakers not just because they are invisible, but because they actually sound really good as well.  My dad is an audiophile and I have grown up with high-end speakers and sound systems.  I find these speakers to be pretty comparable to high quality free-standing speakers.

Hopefully I haven't bored you completely with this post and that now you know of a way to hide some of the electronics in your home.  Now Tech Guy can have his gadgets and I don't have to see them! :)

  1. I would love these! Have to show this to my husband as he's the tech guy in this household. I'm not crazy about speakers when they are cluttering counters and tables. :( Definitely showing this to him. How's the sound quality???

    1. The speakers actually sound really great. Not at all muffled as you might expect for something behind the wall.

    1. I'm glad you liked the post. The speakers really are a great solution and if you're building new then you can easily run all the wires ahead of time.
