I've finally finished and photographed my other DIY art. I decided to paint some numbers on a canvas that are significant to us. I'll let you try and figure out how. :) I think they add a nice graphic punch to the other side of the fireplace and it continues with the same black and white theme as the Marimekko art I shared a couple of days ago. It's not perfect, but as a friend of the family might say, "Kylla se kelpaa Nalle's Houssille" (It's good enough for Nalle's House). I actually like it when things aren't super perfect.
I am not a painter and haven't really painted anything since 9th grade art class, so I printed off the numbers and traced them onto the canvas before I started painting. The font is stardos stencil and is free to download here. One thing I did to make the numbers easier to trace was to leave the open parts of the number attached and trace the overall shape first. This kept the spacing in tact.
Here are some more pictures for you to peruse.
Finally, Here is the before and after...
I think it looks a lot less bare now and I'm really liking the black and white. I haven't decided yet whether the number art needs a frame. For now, I'm leaving it as is, but I might change my mind in a couple of minutes (I tend to be quite indecisive). :) Our pillow situation in this room is a little lacking at the moment and I think my next step will be to hunt down some fun fabrics to make pillow covers. The string on the fireplace is the very beginnings of my Spring mantle...consider this a tiny sneak peek. :)
What do you think? Do you like the black and white? Should I add a frame to the canvas? I'd love to hear your feedback. :)

oh, that looks great! I think I vote for no frame....I like the way it balances out the b&w art on the other side but without being too matchy right now. As for the significance--probably you picked it because it's how old my three oldest kids will be next December when Gus turns 8. Just kidding. Anniversary?
ReplyDeleteThanks for your input Gretchen. I too like that it doesn't match perfectly.
DeleteVery neat! I think I prefer it without a frame.
ReplyDeleteThanks! I think I'm liking it without the frame too.
DeleteI think it looks just great now. No frames needed.
ReplyDeleteThanks Minna :)
DeleteIt looks very good! I like the big bold graphic numbers. Perfect match for the Kivet pattern. I think I too will lean towards no frames. I like your pillows. And I especially like your Marimekko quilt. That looks delicious. :D Love the combination of polkadots (which I love anyway) with the Unikko.
ReplyDeleteThanks, the quilt was a baby shower gift from my sister. It was made by the same friend who made the diaper bag hanging in the mudroom post. The polkadots and black and white flowers are great for babies. Both my boys like/liked looking at the patterns.
Deleteno frame! love this look!
ReplyDeleteNo frame - I like it just the way it is!
ReplyDeleteIt looks like no frame is winning the vote at this point. :)
DeleteI really like this. I've been trying to think of some art to make for a small wall in our kitchen and significant dates in numbers would be perfect. Thanks for the inspiration! I'm pinning it to reference later!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for the pin!
DeleteI love your art and the space. It all just looks so fresh. I also love have Pilot is dressed up in a pilot outfit. So cute!!
ReplyDeleteThe outfit was a yard sale find. The previous owner said it was a Halloween costume, but Little Pilot wears it whenever. :)
DeleteI think they look great as is! I like it better when things are not a perfect match but coordinate!
ReplyDeleteI wanted them to look a little different. I originally purchased two of the big frames and planned on printing the numbers, but then felt that changing to a canvas would add another level of interest.
Deletelove it, especially the black & white!
ReplyDeleteoh these look great anu!!
ReplyDeleteas much as i love all-white, black always grounds a room...
hmmm... baby 1's birth year... baby 2's birth year... and? 8 yrs of marriage? (i'm really trying to figure that one out!)
Can you tell you me what size font you used as well as the canvas size? I love this idea and was going to use my wedding date. Thanks!
ReplyDeleteA wedding date would be perfect for this project! The font size for my numbers was 932.71pt (almost filling an 8 1/2 x 11 for each individual number). The canvas was a 2' x 3'. I hope that helps. Have fun painting. :)
DeleteI so want to do this too! I have the canvas now just need to put our dates on it! Love how it changed your look! I love this idea!!
ReplyDeleteWhere are your curtains from? I also love those!
Thanks! I made the curtains from Marimekko's Lumimarja fabric in the sateen weight. I'm not sure if this exact colour combination is still available, but there seem to be some that are similar: http://marimekkovancouver.com/catalog/fabric/printed-fabric/lumimarja-sateen/1347. I hope that helps!
DeleteLove your rocking chair! Where did you get it?
ReplyDeleteHi Lynn. The rocking chair is by Monte: http://www.montedesign.net/modern_nursery_glider.html. I purchased mine secondhand, but I believe they're still available.
DeleteLove this! I love your wall paint color too; can you tell me what color it is?
ReplyDeleteThe wall colour is cloud white by Benjamin Moore - cc40. Thanks!
DeleteThank you so much! Love the room!!
ReplyDeleteI love this idea! It's so simple and pretty!
ReplyDeleteLove it! Where did you get the canvas?
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! The canvas was purchased at Michael's.
DeleteLove love your blog!
ReplyDeleteWas just wondering… is your whole house painted Cloud White by Benjamin Moore - cc40?
I am looking for a super light grey paint for my house because I'm too scared to go straight white. Are you familiar with any light light greys? Does cloud white have a hint of grey :-)
Thanks so much! Yes, our whole house is cloud white and it's a warm white. I suggested grey owl by benjamin moore for my sister's house and she loved it. I have seen this colour painted at 50% strength or 1/2 the lightness which is a very light grey. You can see a house with this colour at half the strength here: http://www.pinterest.com/pin/189714203025577123/. If you find some greys that you like, going with half the strength may give you that really light colour you're looking for. I'm not sure if the paint store will mix a tester pot at half strength or not, but that might be an option for testing the colour out. I hope that helps!
DeleteHi love this !! What kind of paint did u buy ?? I'm just writing on ours for the kids playroom and want to buy black paint...suggestion on paint brand?
ReplyDeleteHi Lucy. Thanks so much. I used acrylic paint. I think the brand was Artist's Loft in "ivory black" (from Michael's). I hope that helps and I'd love to see pictures of how yours turns out. :)
DeleteI love how such a simple design makes such a statement! Can you tell me what size canvas and which font you used? Thanks :)
ReplyDeleteThanks so much! The font is stardos stencil and the canvas was approximately 2' x 3'.
DeleteBeautiful! And so inspiring! I'm going to make a few for our master bedroom, one with the day we met and one with our wedding date!
ReplyDeleteHi Anu,
ReplyDeleteAbsolutely love this project! Question for you, what font size did you use? I'm thinking of going a little bigger but want to be sure I have a benchmark here. Thanks!
Hi Trace,
DeleteThanks so much! The font size for my numbers was 932.71pt (almost filling an 8 1/2 x 11 for each individual number). The canvas was a 2' x 3'. I hope that helps and good luck with your project!
What a fabulous idea! This room is beautiful :)
