MOD MARIMEKKO EASTER GARLAND

It's been a crazy week!  Our basement flooded again!  It was ground water (from the spring thaw) this time and came mostly from where we had our sewage pipe dug up and replaced last summer.  It looks like we'll have to dig around the whole house this time to replace the weeping tile.  So not looking forward to the mess.  Luckily the damage isn't too bad as the basement is still pretty much gutted.  We have some metal framing and styrofoam insulation up, but that should dry out okay.  Fun stuff, huh?

Well, onto some nicer news... I added a little more Easter to our mantle via an egg garland.   The mantel itself is pretty simple.  I just added a Toikka bird from our bedroom and some pussy willow branches in a vintage vase that my sister inherited (I get to "store" it for her for now).  The beaded Easter egg wreath  I made earlier is hanging in front of the mirror.

Do the eggs look familiar?  It's more of that Marimekko wrapping paper and some packaging repurposed.  I glued the wrapping paper onto some card stock scraps and then traced egg shapes onto the back before cutting them out.  I got my egg template from here

To make the string on which I hung my eggs I used four different strands of wool (all different colours and weights) and twisted them together very tightly and then folded my twisted string in half and let it twist onto itself.  To get a string this long I cut my wool strings to be a little over three times the width of my mantel.  It's a good thing we live in a wide ranch so that I had enough space to twist such a long string! The eggs were clipped on using cute mini clothespins that I picked up from the dollar store.

I had to add this next picture since, in the reflection, I happened to capture "Hey Canada" on the tube and the mess which is our crazy life.  There is all sorts of junk on the units and shelves like baby bottles, creams, baby carrier, toys, Little Pilot's artwork, etc.  I really need to style those shelves at some point.  Maybe after I get through making pillows for the sofa.

And here is the whole set-up.  I'm hoping I've got the right balance of the blue with the black and white.

I'm happy with the crafts we've made so far for Easter.  Typically, I keep my decorating simple for holidays, but I may still add a little to our dining room to help welcome spring (Just don't bring anymore water into our basement, please!).  Happy Friday!
