EASTER WREATH

I've been slowly, but surely, crafting for Easter.  One of the first things I made was this easter egg wreath.

It took a few days for me to make, but I am really happy with it.  It has a beaded necklace look and I love that it is made with natural materials (real eggs and wooden beads).  The main reason this took so long for me to make was all the "egg" work:  I had to gather enough eggs, blow them all out, dye them and wait for them to dry.  We ate a lot of eggs last week (mainly a frittata and some baked goods) so that I could get enough eggs for my wreath. :)

This is how I made my wreath:

To blow out my eggs I made two small holes in the top and bottom of the egg (one hole should be slightly larger).  I blew out the egg by blowing through the smaller hole - you can blow it yourself (like I did) or use one of those blowing thingies.  Make sure to wash and rinse the outside of the eggs well.

To dye my eggs I combined 1 cup hot water and 1 tsp of vinegar with 5 drops green food colouring and 15-20 drops blue food colouring (this gave me a nice green-blue colour).  The  blown eggs are difficult to submerge in the dye since they're hollow so I used my tongs to hold them down (these tongs may be a little overkill). :)

I dried my eggs on this fun baby bottle drying rack which was a great backdrop for my dyed eggs. :)  I found it best to put them to dry upright so that any excess dye will drip to the bottom and be less noticeable.

This is what I used to make my wreath:  dyed eggs, wooden beads (I got mine at a dollar store), wire and fabric scraps for the ribbon.

I strung my eggs onto the wire using the holes I made when I blew out the eggs.  I alternated an egg with two wooden beads.

Little Pilot was really excited to help me put the beads on.  After a few tries he was able to do them all by himself.  I find that doing these crafts with Little Pilot gives me a chance to talk with him about Easter and its real meaning.  I would love for him to grow up and tell me that he was glad he learned about Jesus and not the Easter bunny.

The ribbon I used to hang the wreath was made from scraps of Marimekko Lumimarja fabric that I had leftover from a pillow cover I made (I will share my living room pillow update soon!).  I simply sewed a loop from one piece of the fabric and placed another strip of fabric over it.  I also love how the eggs all picked up the dye a little differently which makes the wreath all that more interesting and pretty.

Here's the wreath in our living room.  I'm still working on adding some more to that mantle and will share it when it's all done.  I thought I'd let you see where the wreath is going in our space even though it is really undecorated at the moment.  :)

Thanks for stopping by and taking a look at my Easter wreath.  Have you been crafting/decorating for Easter?

    1. Thanks. Blowing out eggs can be a little tedious, but then you can use your dyed eggs over and over.

  2. That is lovely Anu! I love how it turned out and the fact that you keep bringing the same color over and over again in your house. Little pops here and there ties it all together in a great, stylish way. :) Can't wait to see what else you come up with for the mantle.

    1. Thanks Ina. I was going to dye my eggs yellow at first, but I ended up with blue-green again! :)

  3. so pretty--love that color! (I always seem to wind up with blue again here, too, lately) And I love the way they're all a little different, too--that one egg looks kinda stripey.

  4. oh anu i LOVE this!!! simply LOVE it!!
i was supposed to make a wooden bead wreath for christmas, but that didn't happen this past year... i think i'll make a wreath like yours for easter!
hmmm... just got me thinking: i bought lucy some wooden eggs as an easter gift (wooden eggs that she'll be able to play with in her future-kitchen-birthday-present...); basically an excuse to give her the eggs already (she's really into cracking eggs, playing with the yoke... and peeling hard-boiled eggs)... maybe i should make a wreath like yours but use wooden eggs?! i'll have to see how hard they are to drill through and how heavy the wreath would be... that's another nice thing about your egg wreath - i'm sure it's very light!

    1. Little Pilot loves cracking eggs too. I love your wooden egg idea. It might just work with a long enough drill bit or maybe drilling from both ends. Where did you get the wooden eggs for Lucy? I'd love to get some for Easter and for the boys to play with. :)

  6. Your wreath is stunning! I wanted to make a wreath too this year, but I just never got around to it. Oh, well, there's always next year! Adding the beads is such a neat touch too. :)
