** UPDATE: This space is now finished! You can view the reveal HERE.
Our mini mudroom is taking awhile for us to finish. I have baby love and those "terrific twos" that have been occupying my brain and time these days. We have, however, been plugging along and I wanted to share some of what we have done so far. I am going to be posting some of the DIY projects as we get them done and hopefully be able to show y'all it totally finito soon. :) Today's progress post is about the DIY bench Tech Guy built.
I was planning to let you see how we made the bench. I got a pic of the frame we used to mount it (3 - 2x4's), but that's it. I was planning to take a photo of the bench assembly after Tech Guy put it together, but after he dry fit it, it was so tight that there was no removing it without damaging the walls (oh dear!). I ended up having to finish it in place.
This is how we made the bench: It was made from two oak veneer plywood pieces (one for the top and one for the front edge). The two pieces were miter cut with a table saw so that they formed a 90 degree. Tech Guy then put a cleat (scrap piece of wood) the length of the bench behind the joint in order to secure the two pieces together using screws and glue. If you have questions drop me a line in the comments below or via email and I'll try to explain this better for you.
I finished the bench to match our hardwoods which are natural oak and then polyurethaned it. I am really pleased with the result and you can see above that Tech Guy did a pretty nice job with the joint. It is super even. :)
Now for a little before and progress....
You can see that we have added some accessories already. We made the coat hooks and I will be posting a how to soon. We also got a glass pendant light that matches the turquoise in our kitchen backsplash perfectly. We actually found it randomly when poking around at our local Habitat for Humanity Restore. We've started the artwork by hanging some plates and are working on some DIY art for the other side. I also have a DIY planned for the baskets that will go on that shelf.
So it's coming along and I have lots more to share. What do you think so far? Am I going in the right direction? I'd love to hear from you. :)
