Herringbone Cowl - Handknits

I haven't posted any knitting projects for awhile and thought it was about time I did. :)

This cowl was made based on a pattern from purl bee.  I simply made it shorter and used some buttons to fasten the two ends together creating a cowl.  I didn't even have to make button holes as the stitch pattern naturally had holes in it.  This stitch pattern leaves a kind of flat feel to the cowl which is nice and doesn't feel like you have an overly chunky thing around your neck. :)   I think the pattern would have showed a little better with a solid yarn, but I really liked the colourway in this yarn from malabrigo.  It's worsted weight merino and is super soft.  I absolutely love that yarn!  I ended up using one skein for this cowl.

So here are some pictures of the cowl on me (cringe!).  My much more beautiful sister was unwilling to be a model and my cute pilots really weren't the right demographic for this piece.  I had Tech Guy take the pictures in the last minutes of sun right before my sister went back home and took the cowl with her.  In our haste I didn't have a chance to check that the cowl was on perfectly or that my hair wasn't in the way.  I think you can still get the idea though.  The wooden buttons really added another element to the cowl.  I always love wooden buttons against a textured knit.

Overall the cowl turned out beautifully and I think it looked even better in person.  I almost wanted to keep it for myself and my sister has even asked me to make another one for her already.

Has anyone else knit something lately?  I'd love to see what you've made.

  2. Gorgeous! I love the texture, and the buttons. I'm struggling to find time to finish my baby's latest puerperium (photos over on my page), but I have to because I've just ordered wool to make another Veera Valimaki stripy shawl (patterns that I'm positively addicted to), this time it's going to be the long-anticipated 'Varjo' pattern... I can't wait for the wool to arrive!
